Hi. I'm a newbie with an 05 TDi estate purchased 4 months ago. The computer display inexplicably went faulty last week. The "door open" icon came on when I got into the car and showed when the door was closed (car icon with all doors closed). However, when I switched the ignition on, this car icon remained, instead of the "normal" multifunction display. As soon as I touch the the MFD switch everything reverts to normal as long as I'm driving the car. When I switch off at the end of my journey, the little car icon comes on again. The indicators no longer flash once when I'm locking the car and the little car icon stays on (I'm not sure for how long because by the time I get back to the car it is off, only for the whole story to repeat itself). Any suggestions?

I paid a friend who is a mechanic to do some work on my car. She changed the rocker gasket cover and also replaced the radiator. She had to disconnect the battery to do the work. I have driven the car for about 1 hour since getting it back and have noticed that the mpg reading on the trip computer is all over the place, it changes randomly every couple of seconds. There is no sequence or order to the numbers, it just jumps around from anything as low as 20 up to 200. Can anyone help me understand why this is happening? All other readings on the computer seem fine such as the journey time and temperature. Has this happened because the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, do I need to somehow reset the computer and if so how? I don't understand how the trip computer calculates mpg, are there sensors throughout the engine and if so does anyone know where? Could it be that she has disturbed one of these? She said she will take the car back and try and sort it. She does have a comp with diagnostic software on, does it have to be vagcom? I'd appreciate any help as although she is going to sort it, I'd like to understand it for myself. Thanks Karen

I have recently bought a mk4 2.0 GTI (2001) and the guy who sold it to me said that when you start the car, the 'oil sensor workshop' warning will appear on the trip computer and beep. He said that he hadn’t had the sensor replaced because he had been told that the trip computers can be temperamental and don't like to be messed around with. I don’t know if it's worth replacing the oil sensor if it's going to mess up the trip computer. Has anyone else experienced this problem or know of any issues with the trip computer? Any advice would be much appreciated. Karen
