iamdrpaul
I've noticed a really annoying cabin noise from the ? engine when starting the car in neutral. The noise disappears when the clutch is depressed. My car is 5 months old and has done 3500 miles. Drives superbly and no obvious problems with gear change or the clutch. I've just had a new gear box fitted under warranty today --the noise is better but still (annoyingly) present. Has anyone experienced a similar situation. Could it be the fly wheel? I've heard that these have a tendency to fail
Tarmac_Terrorist
Hi iamdrpaul - welcome to TSN. My technical knowlege is a little weak but others will no doubt be able to better advise. I had a similar issue on a Ford a few years ago and it was aparently a worn thrust bearing. daveb197
Hey I too had the same problem with my car, to some it up sounds nearly like a diesel on idle. I brought it too the main dealers and they replaced wait for it;Vaccum Pump,Fuel pump, timing belt, tensioners ana afly wheel. None of these fixed the noise after a long persistant with them they discovered that ot might be a rear timing chain. They replaced that and no more noise. So fropm my experience I would say thats what it is. Good Luck!
iamdrpaul
Dave I'm glad your problems sorted -How long did it take for them to work it out ,or was it purely through chance!I'm a bit apprehensive about going back but at least with the suggestions from this forum I stand more chance of getting it cured ?! daveb197
Each time I went back to the garage they changed a different item, and through process of elimination they found out what it was.I know people say that the engine in a FSI can be slightly tappety but this was more like a diesel.Working fine since it was fixed. iamdrpaul
The Saga continues - I have had new flywheel /clutch/gearbox but no better. Today heard VW have said to have new engine!-To be fitted next week(under warranty I hope). I am in shock- not had chance to speak to head mechanic yet so I don't know what to think. stooH
I'm no mechanic but surely if it's in neutral and the noise disapears when the clutch is depressed it can't be anything to do with the engine? Have you tried talking to different dealers to see if anyone else has any other ideas?
iamdrpaul
That would seem logical .I guess they haven't got a clue and are just hoping that a complete engine change may solve the problem.Cars been at the dealers garage for 7 days now -so I don't think i can get it back till they've completed the job. johnnysenna
It can't be the engine! I have a Porsche 993 RS CS and it has a light weight racing fly wheel. In neutral it sounds like a cement mixer full of gravel. When you depress the clutch, the noise goes away. So tell your mechanic that the problem is you car is like a 993 RS CS!! Mook
It can't be johnny - everyone knows that GTIs are quicker than all 993s, 996s and 997s

iamdrpaul
I spoke to the mechanic today. He says that the noise source (checked with stethoscope) was from within the engine and that although the character/loudness of the noise changed when the clutch is depressed it remained present throughout. I dunno , I suppose I get a brand new engine to break in but it means I'll have to delay the remap I had planned
