If its bright red its not coming from deep down. Most probably a broken blood vessel in your throat and not to worry about. If its still hapening tomorrow Id go. 169144-ok.gif

What I would have said as well. One off ok(ish!) but any continuation then go and see the Doc.

I managed to puke a bit of blood the other week during a particularly bad migraine but no repetition since then and seems like no lasting harm. I suspect that was a small rupture somewhere but as long as it doesn't happen next time I'm ill I will be reasonably cool about it (well as cool as you can be when praying to the porcelain god).

Definitely get it checked out.

From my First Aid manual: coughing up blood that is bright red and frothy suggests bleeding in the lungs.

If it's not too much (i.e. you're clearly not incapacitated or going into shock through blood loss...) then it may be a fairly insignificant wound to somewhere in your respiratory system.

You've not been near any active volcanoes lately have you? tongue.gif

Sparky, has your annoying cough been violent, i.e. lots of harsh coughing fits? That might have triggered it.

However I'd tend to err on the side of caution and get this checked out in the morning - as bazza says blood is usually in the body and if it is still ongoing then a doc's opinion would be best even if to put your mind at rest.

Hope all is OK. 169144-ok.gif

No, can't remember being near a volcano!

Have felt run down for 3 weeks now, with an annoying cough, but tonight was when it started. I'd say it was about 5ml or a little less each time.

Didn't mean to alarm you. tongue.gif

First Aid training tends to make one fear (or rather check) for the worst and work back from there...

Chances are it's a chest/throat infection that your body's doing a decent job of killing off.

I would definitely go to your GP though. Being a bloke I know what we're like about doing that, but better to know for sure it's nowt serious. 169144-ok.gif

No, not violent coughing. I'd have accepted that as being the cause, but no. Sadly not.

Dude, get it checked out. Bright red means it's oxygenated blood - I.e it hasn't been around your system yet. Could be something, could be nothing.

Any of these symptoms too?

Symptoms such as lightheadedness, dizziness, or thirst, which might indicate a severe amount of blood loss

Other symptoms such as fever, chest pain, shortness of breath, and blood in the urine

I only really know about stuff like this from a diving physiology perspective and even then only from a primary/secondary care.

The big pointer is that if you're feeling lethargic/light-headed too then you really MUST get it checked out.

IMHO you should get your ass to a docs.

have you had a chest infection recently?

you imply it has happened before - did you have chest infected then?

I am assuming it doesn't hurt when you breathe in and you're not short of breathe.

As a MINIMUM you need a chest xray.

Of it has happened before I would get myself referred to a Chest Physician and either let em still a tube down your throat or else let someone like me zap your chest and and have a look at the CT scan.

Sorry, didn't mean it to sound like I've had it before. I've not. Just felt run down lately (last 3 weeks), basically lethargic, temps all over the place, and then this last night - but no so much today.

Not had a chest infection for some years now. It doesn't hurt when I breathe, but friends are telling me I'm taking lots of short breaths, although I didn't realise I was. I have asthma so that's fairly normal for me I thought.

IF your GP has the machine get him to measure your oxygen sats.

taking lots of shallow breaths and coughing up blood....is your pulse fast?

if so I would get your arse to A&E.

OTT maybe but these are red-flags for a PE [blood clot in your lungs] which is potentially fatal - 3rd most common cause for sudden death in men over 30 IIRC.

My paranoia stems from having lungs full of 'em and like you it was only when a mate [GP] came to visit, shook my hand and felt my pulse racing away that he drove me straight to A&E where I was admitted...deep down I knew but I was passing it off as a bit of muscle ache!
