Diagnostics 01044 Am I Doomed??

Filled up with petrol the other day, started up and the ABS and ESP failed....

Took it to a local garage and they used some generic tester which came up with 2 faults

00778 Steering Angle Sensor -Intermit

01044 Control module Incorrect Coding ????

It asked to be reset but it wouldnt.

Took it to another garage where they used a SnapOn diagnostic unit and the same codes came up.

Emailed Paul at Audipages, he was unable to help, saviour that he is , so anyone got any ideas???

Its going to a VW dealer who charge £39.95 for a 'Health Check' including diagnostics which is a lot better than Cardiff Gate Audi who want £110 just to plug it in!

Both Garages said that only Audi/VW can reset this code IF it can be done, but didnt the EU stop Audi/VW from NOT sharing info with other organisations such as the AA, RAC, etc and as such manufacturers like Ross Technik, Texa and so on?

I'd agree. Dont panic too much. ESP is linked to ABS, and ABS comes on at slightest hint of the wrong sort of leaves on the ground 169144-ok.gif

There will be someone with Vagcom local to you I'm sure that can reset it, however do make a note of the faults prior to doing this as it may well represent a genuine fault, and if it occurs again you'd benefit from knowing if its the same code.....

The only module that I'm aware of that has a hard-failure is the airbag crash sensor which after deployment is supposed to be thrown away....

I see no logic to why an ABS module would be un-resettable. Wosrst case, maybe its lost its coding, and thats why it cant reset... There cant be that many permuatations of ABS coding, we all have 4 wheels.. smile.gif

I have the same warning lights on in mine, although it is intermittant. i haven't found out the fault code but I was advised that the issue was the speed sensor on the wheel hubs needing cleaning - sounds like your error codes are pretty specific though so I doubt it's the same thing.

More to the point - I've used Westec in Newport and they're more reasonable than Audi. Pop round there and have a chat with them, and see what they think.

Right here we go!

Took it to VW Cardiff for their Express Health Check £39.95 inc Vat and they checked the abs with their 'new' diagnostic system and what did they get?

Well of course Errors 00778 and 01044.

With 001044 they found that the dealer code was 000000 meaning that the last person who looked at it was a non Audi garage and the unit code was 0. They told me they couldnt get the code and I'd have to go to Audi for it.

But dig this, they didnt charge me a penny cos they couldnt fix it!!!

Cardiff Gate Audi take note.

So I called Audi UK Customer Services.

"No you cannot have the code to your particular model even though we would have it on our database, you have to take it to one of our 'dealers'" and be charged £112 just to look at it and be told this needs replacing, that needs replacing etc etc.

So I took Oliveero's advice and went to Westec in Newport Gwent.

Guess what they had VAGCOM.

It took some time to find the right code cos EKTA was coming up with a code for my 4.2 which related to a 3.7 pre5001 chassis number.

A lot of scratching of heads at this point.

Now most mechanics I know would have given up by this point but to give Jock and Grant the credit they justly deserve they persisted and after taking the cover off and checking all the ecus under the bonnet for part nos etc. it finally accepted the code and Hey presto everything is working!!!

It is SO great to find a garage with somebody who knows what they are doing and I cannot praise them highly enough.

I'm going there again to check out the power on their rolling road and consider some of the chipping alternatives they do.

With regards to 00778 this is an intermittent fault on the steering sensor which may have confused the ecus 'talking' to each other. Ive noticed that sometimes the volume and station controls dont work and this might have compounded the problem in the first place as there is a unit behind the steering wheel which controls allsorts.

Once again good job done Westec.

PS the cover over the ecus is held on with steel screws and BRASS captive nuts! (electrolysis!)

All but 2 were seized and had to be forced out.So now I'm going to have to pay attention to sealing it up properly. the back end, in particular by the bulkhead, collects leaves and is difficult to clean. If it leaks here water will pour straight onto 3 multi connectors.

You dont want even a trace of humidity in this area.

A poor bit of design I must say.

Anyway its a lovely evening....

I'm going for a drive.

I love eveybody again!!!
