shark_90
Would my LCD TV die a messy death if I mounted it on the wall above my (live) coal fire? It really would be the best place to view it but I'm worried about the heat.
bazza_g
doesn't heat rise?
kermitfrog
AFAIK, it'll be fine. The chimney wall shouldn't conduct heat into the room and where the TV is located on it should be at ambient room temperature anyway. Tape a thermometer to the wall for an evening while the fire is in use and compare this with the room temperature. Shouldn't notice any difference. Most important thing is to make sure the TV has enough space behind it and the wall for air to circulate.
mark88
I don't think they look too good above a fire. 2 focal points above each other doesn't work for me. see avfroums.com (the home cinema diy section) for lots of pics of various mounts. ChrisT
I've had a 32" LCD mounted above the stove in our fireplace for 18 months with no problems. The stone in the wall never appears to get hot on the room side of the chimney. Next time you have a fire, feel how hot the wall is, I bet its pretty cool. Sparky
I've never really got on with TV's above fireplaces. They are at the wrong height/angle to get the best from it, when you're sat down on your sofa.
gizze
The main problem with an LCD mounted higher is the viewing angle, as sparky says. You must get a bracket that can allow enough tilt so it is facing you straight on otherwise you will have a very odd looking picture that is very washed out and the colour temperature will be way off with a very blue cast. shark_90
Cheers for the thoughts guys My fire isn't really a "focal point" as such but I guess it would be at the wrong angle and a bit too high. Hmm.
ChrisT
I managed to find an LCD mount which had a small amount of vertical tilt (about 5 to 10 degrees). Being up high doesn't seem to bother anyone in our house, though you often find people lying on the sofa propped up with a cushion rather than sitting properly. The only other thing to point out if you're doing this is that you need to consider your cable run as you'll probably need to extend the power cable and find quite a long HDMI, SCART and antenna cable, not impossible, but a neat job would mean chasing them into the wall and plastering over. pontyslapper
What about smoke?? Or do you use that new fangled smokeless stuff?? I know that when my gran was alive, her TV was caked and I mean caked in coal dust and coal/smoke related gunge. That TV still worked after 15 years of constant use, in furnace like conditions, with an open coal fire using real coal not smokeless crap and having the volume full up. Who knows it might last?!? CarMad
[ QUOTE ] Cheers for the thoughts guys My fire isn't really a "focal point" as such but I guess it would be at the wrong angle and a bit too high. Hmm. [/ QUOTE ] I've put mine directly in front of the fireplace and made a box for it to sit on. Works well and its at the right level. Who cares about the fire behind it, it never gets used anyway. shark_90
My central heating is coal fired CarMad, so the fire gets very much used!
