OBD port location?

I have a sneaky feeling its neither and uses a proprietary protocol package with a standard OBDII connector... What are you trying to connect with?

If I try to talk to my Nov '95 A8 with OBDII using VagCom it basically says that the car isn't OBDII, yet in the normal VagCom mode its fine.

OBDII wasn't introduced until 1996 in the US market and somewhat later in other markets. I don't know when Audi introduced it on the A8 but given the A8 was only released in the US in 1997 its quite possible it wasn't compliant till then. If it compliant then (by US law) I believe it will have an 'OBDII Compliant" sticker somewhere under the bonnet.

There are at least 3 different protocols standards used including ISO and 2 different SAE ones...

Just to confound things further there are a number of different 'versions' used for OBDII and not all code readers will communicate with all vehicles. BMW for example use KW2000, VAG use KW1281 and so on. Whats even worse is that manufacturers (and Mercedes is one) will sometimes use different versions on different cars in the range - for example in 2003 they used KW2000, KW-FB and MB-ISO concurrently!!!

CAN came after OBDII and is a development of OBDII, so your A8 will definitely not be CAN.

There is a lot of information about OBDII at www.obdii.com

COM1 was in use by myserious forces. COM2 was spare though. I had tried them all. I'll twiddle the port settings some more. If I set USB or COM1,3, I get a different message, suggesting the serial port is opening on COM2.

I've tried a few other free OBD programs to no success.

Should still work though. Its similar to the one I bought. Have used it on a lots of cars but for some reason it doesnt communicate with a mates 95 A4 or my brothers 97 A4. Looks like a similar issue with the comm ports. Havent figured out what to do about it but it may be worth trying out yours on another car to see if it works.

As I said earlier, are you sure your car is OBD-II compliant? My '95 will not communicate using OBD-II at all but is fine using VagCom in the normal VAG modes and I suspect any pre'97 vehicle will likely be the same.

Having said that, a comms issue as you posted would appear to be a more local PC problem as it suggests it can't find the code reader interface on the com port.

To be sure see if you can test on a known OBD-II compliant car - Volvos seem to work with it no problems from '99 on (not tested anything earlier).

The install proces was the device was plugged in and Windows dug out a driver for the serial-rs232 device. Next up the VAG-COM software was installed, at the end it of the install asked if I wanted to install a driver and I clicked yes.

I don't think I have access to a known OBDII compliant car. How do I operate VAG-COM in the normal VAG modes?
