B7 A4 - brake light warning startup/during journey

Not sure if this has been posted....

But I've had this fault for ages: Brake warning comes on at startup and then occasionally when driving. Flashes a few times then shuts up again.

Anyway, there's a known issue with a certain part, and they can replace the bit with a new one. (That's my teccie description. Apparently the loom goes close to something that gets hot - so they've insulated it more etc too)

Had this done yesterday, and it seems fine now - no brake warnings!

You're wrong Nelson.

Some of the early 2.0TDI's, like mine, had this issue. I can tell you the recall number if I can find it! It involved putting a relay somewhere on the system as the main headlight switch has never been the same since it was done!

I'll find the numbers

I think this might have started happening to me. I've seen it once and the wife's also seen it too today.

- What is the general consensus on what the problem is?

- Is it likely to be dangerous (i.e. brakes not working shocked.gif) or just annoying?

- is this going to be costly ( frown.gif)

Many thanks,

Rich

PS It's a 2004 (B6) 1.8T Avant.

Hi mate, I dont believe the brakes will actually fail -

The two causes we know of are

1) insufficient battery charge causes brake warning (as its the most sensitive system)

2) a sensor/relay gives false warnings due to getting hot

I had the warning lots of times without brake failure, but obviously its wise to get it checked out asap! Since they changed the part, not had any brake warnings!

The part was free for me as car under warranty. Not sure if it applies to B6 though, give them a call though!

Happened nearly every cold start or when the car had been warm, turned off for five minutes and re-started. I've had two new batteries under warranty too! 169144-ok.gif

  • 3 months later...

Update for those who are interested.

I have been getting the Red Brake warning flashing on start up when the car has sat overnight and even all day outside recently, and it has been to the dealer twice now.

They have apparently identified the issue, but the 'part' or changed wiring in the brake fluid reservoir is on back order..

So presumably this is happening a lot?

It was mentioned that this is for larger engines, but I have a 2.0T which is affected.

I am slightly puzzled though, the car definately takes longer to start these days, and turns over 8 or 9 times before it fires.

It is due its 30k service in about a month.

I presume that they have checked the voltage / battery.... its worse on cold days too.

But who knows.

I guess I will be able to tell when the part actually arrives.

Oh, they also use brillo pads to clean it each time, only provided a loaner once and and both times have not hoovered the trunk.

Little things....
