Bluedan
whats the best tyre choice for a 1.9 TDI Avant? I have always put on Dunlop Sport 01's but just wondered if there were any better tyres?

Guest
I have a set of the GSD3 Eagles on the front of my avant, and while they have provided fantastic grip, the longevity leaves a lot to be desired. I put them on in March and they are at the legal limit now after about 9000 miles. Made of cheese. Next ones for me will be the Toyo Proxes TR-1 or Continental Premium Contact 2 tyres depending on the available budget.

shao_khan
I used the Dunlop Sport 3000 sytes on mine - best tyres I ran on the car by a long way - Grip right through until needing replacement, quiet, good in wet / dry. Had a set of Avons, at 50% worn they were dreadfull and felt like slicks in the wet. WAs delivered with Contis - always foudn these quite noisey with average grip on the MK roundabouts. Mook
Pilot Sport 2s or Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3s. Continentals are dreadful, and even worse in the wet.
Frodo
Yepp Pilot Sports are fantastic tyres but the Goodyear is cheaper and for me has lasted longer
jwo
9000 miles ont he fronts - that is very committed or suspension is not quite right. I get 14k out of a set and drive a lot on back rounds with good corners. Do remember that the audi does weigh 1750kg!! I have toyo T1-Rs on other car - they are good in the summer when warm but I don't have great confidence in them int he wet winter months.
Bluedan
Pilot Sports sound good, but the Dunlop Sport 01's I have currently are really good, but you never know until its too late! Will come down to price in the end!

Do remember that the audi does weigh 1750kg!! [/ QUOTE ] I have a bit more torque than most, combined with FWD and living in a city with a lot of roundabouts doesn't help. And I do have a pair of wearing control arms, enough to be felt but not enough to show up as uneven wear on the tyres. But yes, I do tend to use the torque coming out of the roundabouts and that is something I must get out of the habit of.. With my 115bhp passat, I got well over 15k from a set of Conti Premium Contacts with the same style of driving albeit a lot less torque. Interesting about the cold/wet Toyo performance. Are they definitely less grippy than you would expect for the conditions? I found the GSD3s to have more grip in the wet than the pirelli p6000s had in the dry. jwo
I have the toyos on an Astra GSi Mk 4 (200bhp + turbo effort), whihc is about 1250-1300kg. It doesn't really use tyres per se - rears last 30k before transferred to front and new ones put on the back. In the wet/cold wet I don't go into corners as commmitted as i would in the Audi - which is considerably heavier and much more torquey (or if from devon, torquay). Dry warm summer different story - but in the UK/Ireland we don't have the best weather!!
PetrolDave
[ QUOTE ] 9000 miles on the fronts - that is very committed or suspension is not quite right. [/ QUOTE ] Second that - I got 9000 miles out of a set of tyres on an RS4 Avant, you should get much more than that from a 1.9TDI Avant. I had a B6 1.9 TDI Avant for 17000 miles and sold it with the original tyres on - which were still legal.
Chav
I got about 9k from the crappy PS2s on the 3.0tdi. Hence swapped to kumhos again - good hardwearing tyres and will do 20-30K miles even with lots of torque.
Bluedan
Think I'll either stick with what I've got or try the Pilot sports............. What did the car come with from new, anyone know?
Mook
That would depend on which way the wind was blowing and who did a deal with Audi at the time. Tyre brands used on new cars change the whole time

Guest
I got a set of 4 Michelin Pilot Primacy 205/55-R16 for my avant. My thoughts on a control arm problem has pretty much gone away, the worn F1s were tramlining like crazy. The new tires track much more true or me. Also I had issues with low speed sharp turns like in a wet carpark where it felt like a dodgy CV joint, it turns out that again this was due to the worn tyres on the front. The Michelins seem to have decent levels of grip on damp tarmac, near to those offered by the F1s when new. Road noise is well down too. Before the tyre change, it was about equivalent to volume level 4 on the radio. Now I can hear clearly volume level 2 over the same roads at the same speeds. The tyres cost me €10 per tyre more than the F1s, so now it remains to be seen how they last, and how the tyre performance changes as they wear. Guest
Update on the Michelin Pilot Primacy tyres. I've just had to replace a pair after developing a slight sidewall bulge, possibly after a pothole incident on a country road. I had to change to pass the Irish MOT. Longevity - yep, they are long lasting alright! Somewhere around the 25,000 km mark, and still about 2.0mm left. I rotated front-to-back and left-to-right at about 12,000km. The tire wear was even at that stage when I had to change the tyre. I got a pair of new Pilot Primacy tyres, and the tread pattern has changed from the previous ones. I'll be changing out the other pair of tyres at the end of this month anyway to have 4 of the same and back to having more tread I'll give more feedback once they bed in and I get the right pressures sorted. robpink
Michelin PS2s for me, they were fitted OE to my current 3.0tdi, got 25K miles out of them but even with 2mm left were not tramlining. Replaced with F1 asyms but didn't rate them as good so gone back to PS2s again
