L3LGH Posted November 26, 2007 Report Share Posted November 26, 2007 can any one shed light on my electrical problems. I have a mkV 56 Golf R32 which came with RCD500 ice. Ever the adventurer I decided to upgrade it to a MFD2 dvd Sat Nav system. Every thing plugged together perfectly and the system works very well without any problems. I used the existing connectors to hook every thing up and have changed nothing. Ever since this installation the battery on the car becomes drained after a few days. Really annoying as every thing seems to be working ok. I do not know which type of vehicle the Nav unit came out of but is it possible that if it didnt come out of a similar car there might be a software issue that stops the nav unit shutting down propperly, even though it appears to be turned off. When I remove fuse 19 under the hood the Nav Unit is isolated and the battery stops draining. Any help any one ? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

byron13 Posted November 26, 2007 Report Share Posted November 26, 2007 Had this back on my old S4 which was retro fitted, it turned out to be the connectors were wrong and it was "always on" hence the battery draining. Got new connectors and all fine after that. Suspect one of the live feeds is wrong and it is not switched??? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Assuming that this powers the unit and assuming that the connectors were the same as on the back of my RCD500 im hoping that all connections are correct. The unit switches off when you remove the ignition key as you would expect. In the same way as the RCD500 before the nav unit can be switched on and off with the ignition keys removed. (this is the same as my mates R). As this type of unit fits in lots of VW cars is there a chance that the unit needs to be programed to key with an R32 propperly if it came out of a Passat or something like that. I dont have access to vagcom unless I take it to my VW stealer. When I took it there for them to check it out they said they would need the car for a couple of days so that they could monitor if all the sytems shut down propperly over the prescribed amount of time with the keys removed. Does this sound right? Also if I had vagcom how could I check if all was well or if there was a problem? Thanks for your help guys. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
gizze Posted November 27, 2007 Report Share Posted November 27, 2007 What you want to do, and this is all they will do, is get a volt meter from Maplins, they do one for £4.99. Set it to amps and put it in series on the negative terminal of the bettery, what I mean is disconnect the negative lead and attach the volt meter between the cable and the battery. You will now be reading how many amps arebeing drawn from the battery. Get in the car and and let everything shut down, not sure how long this takes on a Golf, but you should hear it when it does? You want to pull out fuses one at a time, when the one that is cause the problem is pulled you will see the amps drop on the meter. You haven't had a phone kit fitted have you?? Froggy Posted November 27, 2007 Report Share Posted November 27, 2007 Be careful jumping to conclusions about current draw. The MFD Navigation units have a standby mode, which draws about 350mA for approx 20-30 minutes before it powers down completely. (This stops it from having to reboot if you have just stopped to fill up etc..) Certain units will switch off completely if there is no navi disk in them, but this does seem to be software version reliant. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
PetrolDave Posted November 27, 2007 Report Share Posted November 27, 2007 When battery draining has been seen on retrofits of the RNS-E into Audis, once the coding has been correct, it has normally (nearly 100% of cases) been an incorrect wiring of the amplifier enable signal - meaning that the amplifier has been on permanently. When my GTI started playing up with a flat battery in October 2006, VW Assist came out twice and said that there was a drain on the battery - from somewhere! Too right there was. On the second visit, they pulled the radio fuse out. That stopped it draining!! Of course it would. To cut a long story short, I've posted somewhere in the MKV GTI section here or on uk-mkvs.net that the dealer subsequently replaced the battery and the alternator. Great isn't it?
