Nelson_R32
Looks like I've got a wisdom tooth growing, but it appears it's growing out from my mouth and into the cheek The pain feels like and the whole left hand side of my face is in agony from the pain. The gum is broken from where it's trying to break through and i've got a swollen tongue. Not exactly expecting a remedy, but any advice on something to dull the pain? At least until I can get it removed

MikeA2B
I had 2 taken out at once, the dentist was a butcher but he had them out in seconds, the pain is soon replaced with relief, dont suffer just get them out!
MikeA2B
oh, and try codine for the pain, this helped me
Chav
codine is the yukiest tasting thing known to man though. Bonjella, however, is rather yummy and works - for about 20 seconds - but keep applying it!!!

burble
I've only got one wisdom tooth but it made an extrance a few months ago in similar fashion. It was coming down at an angle so it was digging into my cheek and lower gum. Ouch. Very, very ouch.
Calm Chris
Be careful you don't end up with a full blown abscess. Oil of cloves works well (Dad was a dentist)see Wiki Can be bought from any pharmacy over the counter. Anadin powered and dropped on the zone, is effective against the pain. Some find brandy, gargled over the zone to be helpful
Drinks
[ QUOTE ] Anadin powered and dropped on the zone, is effective against the pain. [/ QUOTE ] Sorry Chris, this should be avoided. Aspirin can cause chemical burns when used in this fashion. Rest of the advice is reasonable enough. Personally I find ibuprofen taken regularly helps most. Calm Chris
Drinks- Things must have changed since the 80's Dad as a dental surgeon used to get 1000's of Anadin in 4 dose blister packs, which at the time was seen as the cure all for tooth ache issues. Maybe the Anadin was offered pre the arrival of the modern day cure all- Ibuprofen? I'm talking Anadin Aspirin, which I thought had value due to the anti inflammatory value which is beter than the anti inflammatory value of either Ibuprofen or Paracentamol- isn't it
bazza_g
for dental pain I was given pethidine - did the trick but don't try and do anything else after taking it
Drinks
Anadin is just a brand name and aspirin is the generic name of the drug. Aspirin has gone out of favour as an anti-inflamatory agent due to newer, better tolerated drugs in the same class. The anti-inflammatory benefit of aspirin really doesn't come into play at the doses that are recommended, it comes into effect at doses above 3g/day. Ibuprofen is currently considered the safest NSAID(in terms of gastro-intestinal side effects.) As with all treatments things do come and go in terms of what is recommended and Aspirin certainly was very much in favour 20 years ago. Now ibuprofen is top of the pile. Paracetamol is not in the same class of drug as aspirin/ibuprofen and does not exhibit anti-inflammatory effect. Pethidine is a whole different level
nordberg
Get it out. I made the mistake of putting off my extraction a few years back and went through hell when I started getting grief on day 1 of a 3 week holiday in Spain. Nearly ruined my holiday and I swore from then onwards I would not put off visits to the dentist.
RobK
Do wisdom teeth always need taking out or just if they hurt? I have one that seems to be emerging slowly and I don't like the sound of the removal very much!
Andrew
I've had all four out (under general) and then, to my and my dentist's surprise, I've another one! 32 teeth, no siree, I've currently got 34 (AFTER 4 wisdom teeth have been taken out). The extra wisdom tooth doesn't hurt but is emerging - I'm not planning to do anything about it unless the dentist suggests it is required. He keeps suggesting I should have my other extra teeth removed too but I'm not keen since it would be done under local and I'm a bit of a wimp when it comes to teeth.
