nordberg
Due to work and other sh1t in my life at the moment, I'm becoming a amazing insomniac. At least every other night I struggle to get to sleep and some nights I get absolutely no sleep. I can't go on like this as it's have a detrimental effect on my life as whole. I am considering going to the GP to see what I can be offered. What I don't want is to be offered a nice warm drink and relaxing thoughts - ie I think it's time for some medication of some description. I've heard horror stories of people getting hooked on sleeping tablets and that's clearly something I want to avoid. Has anyone any experience of insomnia treatments? I've heard hypnotherapy is also a very respected alternative treatment these days?

Chav
when I've had trouble sleeping in the past I've taken the odd one here and there with no ill effect. (borrowed them from friends) I'm certainly not a doctor though, so don't sue me if you turn into a zombie!

Scotty
A family member had similar issues a few years ago. They got some non-adictive homeopathic tablets that worked great. Pop in to your local independant or Holland and Barrat.

nordberg
Been to the doc. Got the usual "are you depressed and would you like prozac" type questions. Ended up with some mild sedatives (a week's worth) to get me round the corner. I didn't get a wink last night and am absolutely shot at today. bells0
Sufferin a bit from this too after the crap i've gone through. Luckily the last couple of weeks have been that booze fuelled that i haven't had any problems, but the last 2 nights [ie back at work] have brought it back. Have some night nurse which did the trick from before Xmas [had a bad cold!] - but dont want to use that for no reason. May try some sleeping pills [or watch some pron...........]
sidicks
[ QUOTE ] Get over the counter Nytol (pharmacy only) - pop 1, they work a treat [/ QUOTE ] The herbal Nytol is bad, I got some pretty weird nightmares after taking it, but for once I agree with Hopsta, the over-the-counter stuff is pretty good. Soulboy
Also look to treat the cause rather than the symptoms if possible? What torments you in the middle of the night and keeps you awake? Sort that out and it should stop waking you up. Also plenty of exercise. If you are physically tired you will sleep.
CarMad
As above, plus don't go if your not tired. Many times I'm better off going to bed when I'm tired not when by better half is. Otherwise I can lie there for hours. If you have problems or things that you are thinking about, right them down on a piece of paper or just read a book before you go to bed to help get you tired. Last thing, keep a regular speed pattern if you can. I get problems if I have a big lie in at the weekend, I'm then not tired when I go to bed and just lie there getting hot and not sleeping. Hope it gets better.
nordberg
Cheers guys. The sleeping pills I've been given worked once and then the next two times I tried them they didn't. Didn't take one last night, got to sleep OK but had horrendous nightmares! I don't think medication is a road I want to go down really, I am just desperate to get my sleeping patterns sorted out. I've looked into cognitive therapies and hypnosis etc and there seems to be some positive feedback for both. I'm going to start with this book as it gets glowing reviews everywhere I've looked, and see how it goes. Will keep you posted as it's clear there's a few in the insomnia club.... nordberg
UPDATE - tried all sorts. Nothing really worked. My insomnia calmed right down as long as I was in my own bed. Whilst staying at the GF's house, I NEVER slept. Obviously I got into the situation where my mind started to associate her house with sleepless nights. Nothing I did helped and I've completely avoided pills. I would rather be up all night and feel terrible the next day than put that poo inside me. I booked a session with a cognitive behavioral therapist. Had the first session last week. Was brilliant. I've never really been one for "alternative" therapies, but I have to say my opinion has changed after just one visit. Going back today for my second session. Have had a 100% success rate sleeping at the GF's since and at home I sleep like a baby. It's fair to say that I'm under a lot less stress at the moment also, but I feel as though I'm much better prepared to deal with stress and anxiety helped largely by the CBT session! gizze
Another option is to get your girlfriend to give you a massage, and a proper one for a good 30 minutes until you doze off, do this for a couple of nights and you will soon not relate the insomnia to her house. A bit of a pain for her, but it does work. The mind is a funny thing!
Maxyboy
Try a head massage. honestly, it will have you sleeping in minutes.
