D1MAC
[ QUOTE ] Just in todays AutoExpress : [1] "Sensational diesel Evo Coupe wings in" - Mitsubishi have built a concept car to rival the TT and it's a diesel (oh and it's got a twin-clutch gearbox. [2] "Cadillac coupe strikes oil" - the CTS coupe was shown in detroit with a diesel. Yep an American car being pushed in America with a diesel engine. That's big news for America. [3] "Merc's moving to superdiesels" - "POWER to the diesel! That's the mesage from Mercedes, as bosses prepare to follow Audi into the high performance oil-burning market." It seems that they are "closer than ever to launching an AMG badged diesel model" "Powerful V8 diesel engines are likely to be used to create models with more than 700Nm of torque and greater long-distance cruising efficiency" And that's just news from today [/ QUOTE ] Auto Express - automotive journalism's recreation of the Daily Star (without the Bongo). The Mitsu is a concept and if it ever sees the light of day, it will sell about 3 in it's home market The Merkins have had diesel cars available for some time IIRC (it's just that they don't sell). I would guess that they will more likely go down the road of hybrids (possibly with diesel at the lower end of the market). But hey, that's a sensible use. Merc - The Germans like soot nearly as much as the French and as much as the Japanese hate it. They can make as many AMG badged diesels as they like but how many supercars or sportscars have they actually managed to make?? Plenty of fast cars and a good number of very, very fast ones, but, how many genuine stars? Anyway, I don't see the same problem with big engined cruisers for belting up & down the autobahn and the like (with sufficient sound deadening and particulate filters). However, if we aren't looking at posers cars only then it's those joie de vie, early Sunday blast, semi on cars we are talking about and I'm afraid for me the rattler will never be anything other than a "we're doing it twice, with the lights on" kind of experience. Problem is that it is very easy for most people to believe the hype and convince themselves and the world that this is as good as it gets. Until the various issues are surmounted, a light & efficient petrol engined sports car will always be better than the heavier and less efficient diesel equivalent - can't argue with Newton (unless we are actually discussing corn starch custard & suchlike ) Oh, and IIRC, the father of common rail diesels thinks that in the medium to long term, more efficient petrols will cancel out most, if not all, of the advantages of a diesel
Golfer
[ QUOTE ] its going to sound like the Audi Diesel Le Mans car [/ QUOTE ] It will have a "Tuned" exaust and will do 38MPG on a run easy. Should out accelerate almost every car out there.
Alphamail
I have an ABT 3.0tdi A6 Avant with sports exhaust and remap. I have to say that it sounds and feels like a v8 when it is accelerating. I really love the car. I have a deposit on the V10 R8 and am worried that I have made the right decision and am thinking about switching to the Derv R8. It is tricky but the torque of the derv is extraordinary and I don't have any doubts that Audi will come up with a good sound if my ABT sports pipes are anything to go by it is not going to be a problem.
