My car just won't sell!

Lady and Gents of Tyresmoke - I have a problem..I just can't seem to sell my car!!

It's been up on the Autotrader for 3 weeks now and although I've had umpteen number of calls about it(+ 1 visit), no-one is prepared to take it off my hands. I'm sure people aren't too fussed about the amount of mileage that's on the clock, after all, that's what the diesel engine has been designed to do. However, they may have issues with the number of previous owners it's had. It's an ex-demo + 2 + myself.

Previous number of owners has never really bothered me - Like I've mentioned, the car was an Ex-demo + 2. Them two previous (human) owners were in-fact, 2 Sunderland Football players. If anything, that gave me comfort, as I could appreciate the fact that they would have thrown money at it if anything were to go wrong/servicing intervals.

It's up for 13,500 at the moment - It has 96,000 on he clock and was registered in July 2004. The car has most, if not all of the optional extras you could add to the BMW Coupe (sorry, no arm-rest) and has also been looked after well by myself. It has a couple of cosmetic hicks, the front two wheels need re-furbished and a tiny scratch on the back wing needs buffed out. Other than that, it's in great nick.

So what could it be? Is it just that time of the year, when people are broke? could it be the mileage? the number of owners? is it over priced? Can anyone give me tips on how to sell it?

Thanks for listening beerchug.gif

that makes 2 of us, my B7 S Line is taking longer than any of my other cars previously to sell, I thought it was a desirable model that should shift fairly quickly, market must be quite at the moment confused.gif

saying that it probably wasn't helped by the fact that some numpety won it on e-bay then decided to disappear!

For a start, I hope you haven't mentioned that 2 previous owners were football players??

That would put most customers off, people will think that it is a nothing item to them and will treat it accordingly, they will not be thinking that it is their pride and joy and have pampered it all its life!

Get the wheels refurbed and the scratch taken out, will cost you £150 and will make it look cared for and not like you can't be bothered.

Is this your car?

If that is you advert you should have put more pics up mate, good ones of the outside and more of the interior.

Also, list history, when it was serviced, when it is next due and what sort, what the tyres are like etc. etc.

Answer all questions in the advert, alot of people can't be bothered to make contact unless they know all this and have decided it could be the car for them.

Price seems alright if that is your car. But people want to see decent pics and January is never good, having said that Feb is even worse!

That's big mileage for a 2004, plus the next owner is going to be the fifth owner which might put them off. 330d Coupe I assume from your user name? Not in the trade so I have no idea what 'book' is, but as scooby says, perhaps consider a slight drop in price (12,950?) Would strongly recommend getting the alloys refurbed and getting a detailer to polish our the scratch. Good wash and wax, nine new photos on a sunny day in a decent location, place new ad.

You have to remember it was nearly £40k new for that car, and ones with 60k miles are getting £16/17k with no nav.

4 years old and 24k miles a year is hardly 'been to the moon and back'. I do 80k miles in 2 years. Some of the dogs I tried when looking at 5/6 year old 5 series with 50k miles on them, all short journey cars around town, shocks and bushes were fecked and they felt tired. Then bought a 5 owner 99k miles 2001 sport and it felt like a new car it was so solid. Everytime there was a change of owner it was followed by loads of paperwork were the car had everything done to bring it up to 'as new' again, we all tend to do loads to a car when we first get them and before we get bored of them. It is always the 1 owner 3 or 4 year old cars that seem to get neglected, I think it is more a case of you don't notice a squeak or rattle when it happens over time, or you don't notice the suspension has seen better days, or it is down on power slightly and could do with new O2 sensors etc. etc. Where as a new owner picks up on this straight away and gets it sorted.

Hold out mate, you will get £13k.

Spot on that paperwork is essential nowdays. There are enough cars out there to ignore the ones without a sequential sheaf of mots proving the mileage. If the car is legit, why on earth would you throw the old mots away? Understandable perhaps with an old tax disc, but no excuse with mileage-stamped mots!

I've nothing against high milers - drive one myself - but sadly the majority of the population prefer low milers, regardless of the fact they more typically get abused around town on short journeys as you say.

No, because it will go over that price-killing barrier of 100,000 miles in their ownership. And who wants to sell a car with over 100k on it, especially if they're the type that does 8k miles p.a.

Don't get me wrong I've no problem with high mileage cars, but I've seen A8's with all the toys at 4/5 years old with similar mileage go for similar money.. and we're talking £75-80k cars not £40k cars.

2004 car with 96k on it - I wouldn't be paying £13,500 for it!

[/ QUOTE ]

An independent dealership had a 2004 (54) 330d M sport for sale a few weeks back - it had 85k on the clock and hardly any toys - that was priced near £16k. Also, there's allot of high mileage, low spec, 2003 320cd sports on the market at the moment, the asking price for them is floating between £9-11k. So, I think I've priced my car accordingly - if anything.

Yes Gizze, that's my car. I thought the pictures were OK? not giving too much away, in the hope that someone can be enticed to come and have a look at it in the flesh.

I've actually got my brother to do the spade work for me because a) he's in the trade business and b) I just don't have the time. The advert does seem like allot of gibberish nonsense, but Autotrader charged me £100 for that add and he only had a few characters to play with - you can pay more, for more space, but I refused to be ripped off.

I think your the only one who thinks the price is right - 330Cd sports are very hard to find with all the optional extras - so i'm hoping this will swing it for me.

Hello

Too much money for the car IMO.

I have spent the last 2 weekends looking for a new car and went to visit a couple. I want an estate or midsize MPV and every where i go people are asking £1500+ over the book price and wont come down.

As a result i havent bought any but maybe thats the same thing with your car. Punters like myself are not intreasted in paying over the odds for cars. There are so few about that are not so over priced.

Its just not a sellers market i presume. After all, if you dont sell you will keep dropping the price until a punter is intreasted or you will never sell it!

Just my thoughts!

I have a fully stamped BMW service history - it came with a BMW car pack, so any little problem was seen to promply - not that I've had many. It's only had to have one MOT, and I've not bothered with keeping the tax discs. I have asked my bro to mention the fact that most of the miles done by myself on that car, are motorway miles. Seems a bit of a anal thing to mention, but it makes all the difference in the world to a car; less bumps and open road keeps car fresh.

We all know that options mean nothing to the price of a second hand car - if they did then I wouldn't have been forced to part with my immaculate A4 for the bargain price of £8,500 last year.

I wish you luck with the sale either way, don't think I'm being a cock for the sake of it I'm just trying to give you another point of view.

Lack of history wasn't aimed at you personally.... sorry if it came across that way.... my reply was in agreement with gizze.

If you have the tax discs from the original owners in the service book, for christs sake don't throw them away!

It's 'cos it's an Audi grin.gif

but seriously, I think your wrong about extras and pricing strategies, people will and almost definitely do pay more for a car with Sat Nav, leather, bluetooth etc.

People might not necessarily pay more for any extras on a secondhand car car BUT it makes it a damn sight more desirable on the secondhand market!

Miles v age? Standard question. Here is MY answer - I would rather buy a high mileage young car than an older car that's done 8K per year. Why? because I know it has been used and at that amount of miles - well looked after (mechanically). It's been sitting on the motorway all day long - cruising. Perfect. And they are cheaper because people haven't got a clue. Over 100K miles

shocked.gif, the engine will just blow up as soon as it hits 100,0001!!! Obviously. smashfreakB.gifsmashfreakB.gif

My 1997 A8, bought in 2004 (IIRC) with 170K miles. Perfect. Sold in 2005 with 200K miles - lost £600 on purchase price. OK, economically people were more flush then, but you know what I'm saying.

I sold my A8, A6, Omega TD etc on eBay, because pictures sell cars. The more pictures (inc scuffs), the less teh purchaser has to worry about - he sees you are being honest. More words too. A few pics and a few words is shite. Doesn't tell the punter anything. With so few words, you assume the sell is only saying what is good ices_blah.gifices_blah.gif.

Owners v mileage? IMHO if the car has many many miles and a few owners, then that is good. Shows the seller has had the car for more than 1 service (usually leaving you with a big service!). Low miles and many owners? I won't touch it, let alone look at it.

My current A6 (1998) has 165K miles and I'm the second owner. If the car had had 5+ owners, then I would be a bit sceptical over it

However, as Gizze says, get the ad online.

Other than that, good luck!
