Hudster
I've been rebuilding my HTPC and it sounds like the PSU is about to die (fan is juddering and making odd noises). I want to get a fanless-PSU to replace it, and was thinking about wattage. I've put a power meter on the mains lead and it's running about 160 watts, never going above 180W even when under load. Does this mean a 200W PSU is sufficient for me, or is there more to it? Would like to keep it as low as possible
bullett
Did you take the reading at startup as I understand that is when most of the pull is more than when under load in normal operation.
Sponge
There are lots of calculators on the intarweb for working out how much wattage you need from a PSU. But bear in mind, there're more to it than just watts. The amperage is just as important, if not more so. http://www.journeysystems.com/?powercalc
Thorburn
The quoted output wattage is combined for all the rails (12V - maybe more than one, 5V and 3.3V) 200W is no good if you have a heavy load on the 12V rail and 5V and 3.3V make up a large proportion of the total power.
