Same engine as the RS6 - would make sense, but JC is likely to be the one in the know. And what would happen to the NA V10?

I don't know for sure, as there has been a lot of 'will they, won't they' type speculation going on for ages now regarding this powerplant and whether or not it'll be turbocharged. If it was an April Fool's joke then it wasn't a very original one!

If the information has indeed come from Katz then it has to be taken at least half seriously - he is the head of powertrain development after all. However, the continued use of the term 'RS8' sets alarm bells ringing with me. Audi does not refer to the discussed, proposed or concept vehicles based on the R8 as anything other than 'R8'. We have the R8 V12 TDI, the R8 V10 TT and the R8 V10 N/A. Moreover, a trusted source was quoted yesterday as saying "According to an e-mail that I just received from a person who works at quattro Gmbh, this Autocar article is pure fantasy..." (Autocar were among the first to publish the news online yesterday).

Here's a post from another forum written by a 'well informed' guy a while ago:

Power and engine confirmed 5.2L V10 386kw/540Nm (approx. 525hp)

6speed manual and R-Tronic

Intro-maybe even before Paris 2008

Sales start-end of 2008

Price wise-it seems that it will be marginally cheaper then facelifted 997 Turbo(!!!)

Performance wise 315km/h, 0-100km/h 4.0s, 0-200km/h: 12.8s

Styling difference:

- Different side blades that have a larger opening

- Oval exhaust outlets

- The front and rear bumpers have fewer louvres in them - only 2 per side instead of the 3 louvres on the V8 bumpers

- The rear bumper actually had a defined diffuser on it like the A4 DTM and RS6 have

There are currently 4(at least) R8 V10 on the road in Germany near Neckarsulm. Two are Daytona Grey, one Black and one Red.

That could of course all be complete bollocks, but it is my understanding that the new V10 variant WILL be powered by a new V-10 developed from the 4.2 FSI engine with cylinders added, and that this will be the basis for all future V10 Audi applications - replacing the Lambo-derived V10 currently used in the S6 and the S8. The fact that the V10 used in the RS6 is this new V10 supports the claims made in the article that the V10 R8 will indeed get the RS6 engine.

Time will tell, I guess.
