simon737
Well, my p-tronic box arrived this morning and i got straight down to business and fitted it, the instructions were very clear and took literally 2 minutes to fit, engine cover off, plugged into common rail and secured the box, engine cover back on, job done! Went for a quick drive to make sure all was well, and so far so good, didn't go very far as I'm fairly busy this afternoon so will get chance to go for a bit of a longer driver later on. The box itself is small and very light, probably about 8 inches long by 4 inches and 4 inches in height, you can also open the end to adjust the sensitivity there are 7 settings (1 being not very to 7 being very) its sent out with the default on 4. The website claims to boost the 123d from its stock 204hp to 265hp and increasing the torque from 400Nm to 516Nm's whilst decreasing the consumption by up to 15% and it also comes with a 5 year guarantee, time will tell on the consumption but instantly there is definately more poke to it, mainly above about 2000rpm, again not had time to fully exploit it yet but will do later . Biscuits
Christ! 204bhp up to 265bhp is a bold statement... I'm sceptical the gains can be so high from a plug-in unit... but would be happily proved wrong. Look forward to the full review shortly... Yeah i'm slightly sceptical myself, hence why i got it, an almost 30% gain is very significant...standby for the full right up soon!
simon737
Just had a chat with BMW this afternoon about the new BMW Performance brake kit it inlcudes:- Front calipers (6 pot) Rear calipers (2 pot) front discs rear discs front pads rear pads all for £1175 incl VAT (not bad i thought) but not fitted as the guy didn't have the fitting time in the EPC catalogue They also fit the E90 3 series, these alloys are £2195 for a full set including Bridgestone Potenza RE050 (18" for the 1 series....19" for the 3 series so probably slightly more)
Biscuits
Last night I was looking at the BIRDS website, pricing up QUAIFE LSD's as they look like a nice option for the 1er and 5er... but a BMW approved part would be prefered. Oh this is a slippery slope I'm heading for....

bazza_g
I too have been eyeing up the BMW Performance catalogue - the 3 series has some nice brake, suspension and styling options - not to mention the steering wheel with the 3 OLED displays for revs etc I picked up the catalogue at the garage on Friday but they had no pricing available, wonder what the costs are like? The LSD is £1,500 fitted by Birds - gets that power down a treat I hear
Alastair_A3
I fitted a QUAIFE LSD to the caterham last year, i recommend them!
shark_90
Isn't this tuning box just going to be a resistor in a box? 265bhp and 516Nm is quite a claim as well.. what are the remappers getting out of this engine?
simon737
Well, having done about 50 miles in it now since I've put it in I can tell you this....it works!!! Took some photos of what it looks like once fitted in the engine bay. The below image shows with the engine cover off where it fits into the common line. So whats it like, well above 2000rpm there is a very noticeable difference in 3rd gear it is quick, the traction control like came on quite frequently on rough ish dry roads (so that was turned off) and was surprised to see it still came on even when it was switched off . They claim that it produces 265bhp and ups the torque to 515Nms...a bold claim indeed, the thing is with this car is that its soooo quiet inside you glance down and the car is easily doing 90 before you realise, it doesn't feel kneck snappingly quick like the Z4M does its kind of a gentle shove in the back and it seems no matter which gear your in the power is constant the speed just keeps coming.....like an energiser bunny, it just keeps going and going!! The re-mappers haven't finished working on this engine yet, i emailed Will at P-Torque and it'll be another 2 months or so, so this is a stop gap before thats finshed...but I have to say its a bit addictive and I'm still getting 45mpg+++
SkyNet
So does it works??? They say about 100 mils before the piggyback will kick in! I will wait for a protune+catless DP for the 1. No black grill on your car??? Why!

DaveP
Is your TC like a 5 series - press once slightly off, press and hold for 5 seconds totally off?
Biscuits
Is your TC like a 5 series - press once slightly off, press and hold for 5 seconds totally off? The 130i is the same as my 5 series, once half off, press for 5 secs fully off.
simon737
I've now done about 150 miles or so since fitting and the difference is now very noticeable!! I'm not sure its up at 265bhp like it quotes on the website but the torrent of torque its creating is amazing...plus very addictive, if I were to hazard a guess it feels more prob around the 240 - 250bhp mark again it is a bit of a guess it'd have to go on a rolling road to find the true figure...certainly much faster than stock thats for sure, now need the new performance brake kit to stop the thing!! Another thing with this is that beacuse now there is more power and torque i often find myself setting off in 2nd as 1st gear is such a tall gear that you set off and almost intantly have to change at about 30mph. I think for £500 its definately money well spent, i've had no issues with it at all, as easy as p*** to fit and turns an already great car into a feckin brilliant one. Just filled up this morning and the range calculator said 503 (52 ltr tank) miles which I've never seen before usually it was about 450 - 470...could be that the engine is losening up now plus the fact that this tuning box has been fitted. As for the DTC, yes its one press for half and half (or whatever that setting is) and hold down to turn off, something i didn't realise until rather recently! If your considering one of these boxes i'd highly recommend it....for a few hundred quid i'm confident you'd be very happy+++
gr4z
Thanks for this Simon. Am interested in this P-tronic box for my 320d and the bold claim of 226BHP from the standard 177. Does this box in anyway invalidate your warranty from BMW?
rottenbend
Well was it worth the Purchase?, or are you dissatisfied.I may be tempted. They claim 367BHP and 717NM of torque for the 635d - Jesus!

I just can not believe that a tunig box gives more power than an ECU remap... just don't trust them.
