New engine for Mk5 GTI....

I don't think there will be any significant noticeable difference between the 2.0TFSI and the 2.0TSI, possibly a tiny bit more torque in the latter.

I'd rather have the Ed30 engine in the ****rocket, tbh, as this is the detuned S3 engine, so can be cranked straight up to 300+ bhp just with a remap, but there you go

....I think you're right about the Ed30 engine but : - Just as an example, 3 of us drove up together to Bruntingthorpe this weekend (400 mile round trip) - One in a completely stock DSG Ed30 (230 bhp), another in a Bluefin'd Manual Ed30 with Milltek Turbo-back, and myself in my DSG Stage1 modded GTI (around 255-ish bhp and 300 ft lb). Obviously we had to keep it fairly legal and most definitely not risk safety.

There was very little in it between us except that the remapped Ed30 was often wheelspinning and DSG shifts were an advantage in the tight twisties approaching Bruntingthorpe. Mine was the only car with suspension and brake mods and my GTI was noticeably better balanced on that particular road.

This wasn't an acid test but merely one real-world example showing some of the differences. Driver skill obviously is also a factor.

Another friend has an Ed30 very extensively modded and pushing out over 320 bhp. He's addicted to the quarter-mile but is now having DSG clutch problems and struggles for grip off the start line.

What I'm suggesting is that power is useless without control and the ability to transfer it to the road. IMO, over 280-ish bhp on the FWD Golf starts being a disadvantage on the road. The R32 and quattro's were far superior off the line. Mind you, a superlightweight Mk2 GTI or early Scirocco with an engine transplant does deliver some jaw-dropping times against the clock!

....179 g/km compared with the current GTI engine's 192 g/km seems quite a significant reduction. I wonder if that sacrifices anything in the 'sporty' driving feel.

The thing to remember is not all mk5 GTIs are that high due to been more than one engine last years were 189 and iirc the DSG is slightly lower.

Down to 179 is not that big a drop imo if you compare it to the 40g/km most BMWs dropped when they change to there efficiency dynamic system. Im not a BMW fan as you know Robin but BMW including there MINI brand have really lowered there CO2 numbers and imo this is going to be more and more important in the many years to come as the dictators in power clamp down on the easy target that is the motorist in the many years ahead.

Saying that its not going to be a problem for most forum GTI owners as they don't seem to keep cars for many years but the tiny few that like me may want to keep there next one for say 10 years its something that is a consideration imo. Those that keep them 1,2 or maybe 3 years or less have a good idea of what it will cost but after that who knows.

....I'm one of tiny minority who plans to keep his GTI long term like yourself, Geoff. In fact I'm even considering extending my VW warranty which ends on August 4th - I should start a new thread on that subject.

Although it's by no means guaranteed, I expect that a future Mk GTI will 'deliver the goods' as the Mk5 did since the Mk1's and 2's. But, as everybody who knows me knows, I love my Mk5 and also the whole GTI tradition, and especially mine in its 'sensibly' modded (imo) state. She's well balanced and an absolute joy to drive without pushing the reliability envelope too far - Who wants wheelspin and clutch issues!? - I don't!

Future GTI versions will be very interesting.

I've got to agree that the GTI engine improvements seem pitiful when compared to what BMW have achieved.

Take the 330i saloon as an example. 173g/km and 39.2mpg from a 272hp 3.0 straight-six. That is impressive if you ask me.

Looks like vag have dropped a "new" engine in the A5: 208 bhp 258 (!) lb f torque from 1500 rpm. 155 mph and 42 mpg with 154g/km Co2.

Looks like they DO have the technology ready to go. I expect the Mk6 golf will be the first to get this however, not the mk5.

Wheels magazine here have just previewed the sirrocco and they referred to it has having a new 2.0T engine - a relative of the GTI's engine but upgraded. Still the same output numbers quoted and dimension but definitely a revised/new design.

IIRC Audi are using valve timing unlike the VW version maybe im getting confused with a different engine though its been a looong day as i have just got back from a longgggg flight.

IMO they do need to do something on the lines of that A5 if them figures are correct it does seem madness and financial stupidity to produce so many slight variations on a engine for your different brands.
