I think I would have noticed horse boxes parked on the hard shoulder of the M1 and M6

can you not just turn the live van alerts off if you dont like them? save you having to delete them all the time?

horse boxes on motorways are extremely rare though. the traffic cops are getting cleverer. ive seen plenty of plain white/grey vans with cameras in which i didnt spot till it was too late. if i had been speeding they would have got me for sure.

According the the manual, you can turn Camera Van alerts off - starts to devalue the purpose of having one of these devices and the automatic updates IMHO.

I agree, I just want it to actually alert me when a van exists, not just scotch mist.

I have had the unit for around 6 weeks and it has still yet to show me a camera van in place, yet I must have received hundreds of warnings.

but wont you be so happy on the one occasion when it alerts you and you slow down to find there is one there round the corner in a tree suit lol

i find its nice to know if there is a chance of a camera even if there isnt one there at that time. just incase ive crept over the limit without noticing. i wouldnt be happy if like you it didnt alert me and there was a camera when blackspot state they update from the police database weekly for mobile cameras.

The ones you keep deleting wont show as active if another person spots a camera there and marks it active. isnt this the same as turning the van alerts off? Im happy with the van alerts (at least it tells you its a van so you know what to look for you can choose to ignore it)

Now you get this as data on a standard Tomtom and I'd want it to alert me to a site that has been used every time regardless of if its in use at that moment or not. How do you expect them to ONLY alert you to a position thats in use, I think you are being pretty hard on them in this respect.

I've been alerted to hundreds of locations in the past with the Tomtom to see nothing, but three times its been a godsend, once on the way out of Hull before the 60, on the way through Wales on a deserted stretch of dual carridgeway and another going through a tiny village just inside of a 30 limit.

I certainly wouldn't want to chance not being told reguardless of the number of false positives it game me. I don't use the Tomtom anymore and don't travel as much either but the locations of potential none fixed camera sites was one of the best elements to the database IMO. +++

I drove back from London last night and it told me about 7 camera vans. Again, none to be seen, so I deleted them.

CraigyB - I am sure I have mentioned this on this forum before but just in case I haven't. The camera van warning is to alert you to a 'likely van' location i.e. a location/layby/bridge where the local safety camera partnership is known to locate camera vans. See Full Month Mobile Safety Camera Listing (For Printing) for this working in practice.

As you know these vans move around during the day and rarely stay in one spot for more than a few hours. Our database holds all of these 'likely' locations and warns you of them using an amber warning on your Professional Connected.

Our camera share technology (available on the Professional Connected and Navigator 9000) allows you to upgrade the status of these locations to 'live' if you drive by and see a van parked there. This will then transmit to all other Connected Road Angel users within 2 minutes. Anyone passing this location within the next 2 hours will get a red 'Live Camera Van' warning.

We currently receive many hundreds of live van alerts everyday. As the population of users grows this number will increase.

If you can think of a better way of doing this I am always open to suggestions.

....Does this mean you have to stop, virtually where the camvan is parked, and then tap in data?

Hi,

You can mark a van location as live anytime as long as the camera safety van warning is displayed - this usually starts 500m before the location.

You mark the van by pressing the 'set live' button on our Navigator 9000 or pressing the 'Store' button on the remote supplied with the Road Angel Professional Connected. It is the button in the top left hand corner of the remote which we recomend affixing on your dashboard or centre console to avoid distracting you from the road ahead.

I don't particularly want another bit of stuff stuck to my dash, I like the inside of my car to be clean and functional.

That's a contradiction in terms - to use the remote in those locations you would need to look down from the road, re-adjust the focus of your eyes from distant to close-up, find the button, press it, look back up and finally re-adjust your focus.

No more so than selecting a radio preset, turning the air con off or turning on your heated rear screen.

However your comments are noted - I'll ask the product development team to investigate whether we could store live vans using a single tap to the top button of the unit whilst in the proximity of a likely camera van.

....Anything that makes it absolutely as simple as possible is important. As existing it's more like fiddling with a mobile phone :nono: than an aircon control and as posted, in the circumstances your primary attention is focussed on the camvan etc.

I wouldn't want another device such as the remote hanging around. I used to have a Pioneer remote controller strapped to the wheel - Kept it on no longer than a week!!

But you don't do any of those in the pressured situation of seeing a camera van and thinking "Oh sh.t! How fast am I going, do I have to slow down, where's that damn button gone?"

 but the idea is that you will have already slowed down well before you reach the van so you'll have plenty of time to tap a device to record it as live when you go past it - else you'll have been caught anyway :roflmao:

Come on, let's get a sense of perspective here......

If you don't want to press the button to alert other Road Angel users that there's a live camera van then don't, it's your choice - you don't have to ! (just like your radio, air con, etc)

On the other hand, if you're not prepared to contribute to the Road Angel 'community' don't moan about receiving warnings about potential mobile sites that turn out to be negative !

Let's not get to sanctimonius about this, if none of us ever broke the speed limit, premeditated or otherwise, we'd never need to buy one of these devices in the first place.

.....and whilst I'm in grumpy mode:

The potential mobile camera sites flagged on the RA Professional Connected are no worse than any other database, whether that's TomTom, Garmin or PocketWorldGPS - on the basis of the 'community' update function it could easily be argued it's better.

To conclude, if you don't like the device and think there are better ones out there, why don't you recover most of your money on EBay, you 'd get over £200 back based on today's auctions.

For me, I'm a satisfied customer who's happy to recommend this device, based on experience and other competitive products - the larger the RA Professional Connected community, the better and more accurate the information about mobile camera sites.

....let's try and re-focus on the problem we are all trying to address here, namely the Police with their speed cameras.

....Not moaning - Most of the newer devices give warnings of POTENTIAL mobile sites. It's merely an ALERT, a reminder to watch your speed, a driving aid.

Let's not get to sanctimonius about this, if none of us ever broke the speed limit, premeditated or otherwise, we'd never need to buy one of these devices in the first place.

....I don't agree. Whereas if a speed camera, fixed or mobile, is present or not in a built-up area, we should keep within the 20,30,40 mph limits as marked and also 50 in roadworks as marked, but sometimes it's very easy to drive just a few mph over marked speed and alerts are helpful.

I don't agree with the 70 mph limit at all. That doesn't mean that I drive over 70 whenever possible, it just means when road conditions allow doing so safely. We all see examples every day of seriously bad driving at speeds far less than 50, let alone 70.

These devices are all alert systems and are a very useful driving aid, in my opinion.

The potential mobile camera sites flagged on the RA Professional Connected are no worse than any other database, whether that's TomTom, Garmin or PocketWorldGPS - on the basis of the 'community' update function it could easily be argued it's better.

....Yes, the databases are all about the same. I've even heard it said that they all take from just one database but don't know how true that is.

For me, I'm a satisfied customer who's happy to recommend this device, based on experience and other competitive products - the larger the RA Professional Connected community, the better and more accurate the information about mobile camera sites.

....Provided they don't wipe themselves out while fiddling with the knobs! The actions of using such a remote device unit is the same as using text on a mobile phone - Quite rightly banned while driving imo.

Let's try and re-focus on the problem we are all trying to address here, namely the Police with their speed cameras.

....IIRC, the thread is about the Road Angel Professional Connected and not about the Police merely doing the jobs they are told to do by government legislation.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well i decided to treat myself and buy a Road Angel Professional Connected, and i have to say compared with the older road angel i had , i am less than impressed. I admit to liking the odd gadget and expecting something from Star Trek. so far i ve had something from Fred Dinenages days at How! . Even though i have registered it , so far it seems not to accept that fact.I turn it on , it finds the sats, but after a few mins turns itself off. After driving along doing battle with it for half an hour i give up and put it on the seat. Not to be beaten i decide it might be i need to download some updates from the web, but after more half hours fighting for it to see my PC , it will not update and keeps erroring. I decided to try the on line help to see if i could find something there, but didnt have any luck. I have called them and hope they will call me back to see if they can sort it out. I wasn t going to subscibe till i knew it worked and i am glad i didn't. I honestly didn't intend to give this product a bad review and was going to post to you how well i had got on with it, but i have to say so far a very BIG dissapointment. I was planning on taking it with me on holiday in a couple of weeks time, but looks like i am going to go back to my old model, and take this one back.
