I bought an RA professional connected last year after i got points

first unit died within 2 weeks, would not power on at all.

Exchanged it

the new one has started dying too, different problem

it powers on.......... then dies immediately when it finds satellites

its hardwired

makes no differenece

even does it when charged

there must be a material problem with the power supply in this product

im hoping RA are on to this and can get me a unit that works

or im going to ask for my money back as its clearly not fit for purpose.

on the other hand my garmin satnav with cameras on it works fine...but i dont like running around all the time with satnav on as its annoying. thatvs why i bought my RA.

when im driving i spend more time stabbing the power button trying to get it to turn on than i do looking at the road

then i spend the rest of the journey annoyed as it sits there looking at me dead as a dodo doing nothing...

not good, somethig this expensive should be more reliable

and VERY annoying

£300 wasted as far as i concerned , unless RA can fix it with unit 3... will keep you posted, but dont hold your breath..... im thinking refund sadly...

Here is an update on my previoulsy posted problem with my RA connected.

Its a VERY happy ending.

At the same time as posting here I emailed Graham Mackie MD of Roadangel.

he responded immediately (on a Sunday!) and one of his team contacted me the following day.+++

They sent me a new unit immediately. Just what i needed to get me back on the road.

New unit is in the car and works perfectly. Im a happy bunny once again, thank you to Mr Mackie of RA for his excellent customer service. We all know electrical things go wrong sometimes and here is a man prepared to respond immediately. Many thanks.

On another note, in general I far prefer my roadangel to my garmin as its unobtrusive and the alerts are more accurate.

RA display is great, looks really good, and I used the adhesive mounting disk when fitting it to the dash and to my surprise that has worked a treat long term. no need to use the (less stable) sucker mounts on the screen.

its mounted to the right of the dash, tucked away i can see it and passengers cannot.

all in all i have been delighted with what the unit does and how it looks, when i see it updating itself automatically its a nice feeling.

and now i have one that works...very happy once more. +++

p.s. my daughters Dell Inspiron laptop died last week and its only 18months old and out of warranty, thats 800quid of dead laptop... if only someone at Dell was as customer oriented as Mr Mackie of RA...... anyone got an email for the CEO of Dell......? i live in hope....

Good afternoon all,

I'm brand new here (as you can see)! Currently using the 'old' RA Classic.

Looking for thoughts/advice/opinions............

The Road Angel Group are offering me a considerable purchase discount on an RA Pro-Conn. They advise that it's because I purcashed a 'Classic' Road Angel many many years ago - nice. But could they be about to market/launch a new product?

UPSIDES

1. Free updates for life (!) I could even purchase a new one free on the subscription savings thus far....but then immediately lose any forward benefits!

2. No heat issues.

3. Compact.

4. Totally secure (un-nickable because it's un-desirable)

DOWNSIDES

1. Can sometimes take too long to pick up sats.

2. Speed read-out is miniscule.

3. Takes up to 15 minutes to complete an internet update.

Clearly, the BIG question is...what would be the benefit(s)?

Going by this thread, the RA Pro Conn product appears to come out 'even'...i.e. 50/50 on like/dislike.

Thanks guys......good debate here.

Please help! My RA Connected does not stay charged. I have it fully charged use it in the car for a journey and the next time I go to use it the battery is totally dead. It then takes 5 mins plus of driving for the battery to charge enough to even turn it on and then because I am moving it takes most of the journey to pick up a GPS signal. The next time I use it it is dead again. I have USB and Mains charged it and the problem still occurs. I have never had problems with any other devices in the car (Talex, mobile phone, Sat Nav etc) so know it isnt the cigarette lighter. I had a Talex which worked perfectly everytime and have been unhappy that the RA is not reliable and is not able to be used at the touch of a button. Please could anyone assist. Thank you

My RA Pro Con has done this twice now, failing to hold charge, works after a while etc, also it would power off from the remote, but not power back on again.

The first time I contacted RA and they said to charge it overnight, I did that and it failed again shortly afterwards. After agreeing a swap, I did an upgrade over the internet and it fixed the issues.

It happened again last week and I tried a firmware update, it failed to load and the problem persisted. So I contacted RA and their customer support sent me a new firmware upgrade which I manually installed, it has worked fine since.

If you PM me your email address I can send you the new firmware.

Good Morning Everyone..

I am new to these forums but having found this thread whilst researching and trying to sort problems with my RA Connected I felt I must jump to the defence of Road Angel and their incredable customer service.....and no I am not associated with them in any way.

Its a VERY happy ending.:)

As a haulage driver my Road Angel is as part of my cab as my map books, sat nav and flask of coffee and over the years I have had every RA product on the market updating as each new one came onto the market.

Like many people on here intially all seemed brilliant with my RA professional...it did exactly what it was supposed to do...and I loved it ....then the problems started but they became very much more pronounced as the weather got warmer and my dash turned into an "oven". I had all faults i seen mentioned on here... the cutting out ...failing to boot up...... shutting down due to lack of charge .....apparent charging failure.......failure to lock onto satellites....

To cut a long story short following numerous phone calls to very helpful customer service staff....numerous flashing and various firmware updates

I had had enough and nearly threw it out the window as I drove up the M1. A week ago it died on the third day of a week away trip and kept starting up and shutting down as soon as it got to the speed screen even at five in the morning when the unit was cold and had been either on the mains charger or the cigarette lighter charger all night...It eventually spent all week on my dash "dead" despite hundreds of attempts to restart it. On calling RA they offered to pick it up immediately but as I was away so it had to wait and I returned it myself with all the accesories I had purchased for it with a very ranting pissed off customer attitude 3 page "history" letter direct to Graham Mackie MD of Roadangel.

An hour after the courier called to say it was delivered I had a call from Graham's second in command Elaine the operations manager at RA explaining she was dealing with my problem as Graham was away. Well that immediately was a good start. +++

She had obviously read my letter in detail.... discussed each of my individual complaints at length with explanations that wasn't just sales talk, it was a genuine concern to reinstate custome faith and then she offered me a brand new unit with an upgrade free of charge to the connected version and a brand new laser alert and external antenna to be delivered the following day to a location of my choice as I would be away on the road and unable to collect it from home.

New unit is in the lorry and works perfectly even if mounting safely is still an issue in lorries or coaches or I assume anything else with a vertical windscreen and a textured dash that dosn't stick to velcro!! Im a happy bunny once again, thank you to Mr Mackie of RA and his staff for his excellent customer service. We all know electrical things go wrong sometimes and here is a man prepared to respond immediately and back up his own products. Many thanks.

On another note, Graham if you read this your I think it would help if your design team and beta testing staff considered the use of your products in other vehicles other than just cars. The RA Classic mounted happily on my windscreen after a slight bit of bending to the metal mounting bracket thereby getting a full view of the sky...the new thermo plasic bracket on the RA Professional range is preshaped and dosnt bend so if you try to mount it on a windscreen that is almost verical the read out screen is pointing skyward..there by being totally useless.....your team sent out some dual lock velcro mounts but like a lot of commercial vehicles the dash in my lorry is very textured and they dont stick fot more than about a day even less if the dash gets hot in the sun... and by having to move it onto away from the windscreen onto the dash it loses the ability to get full view of the sky and get accurate sattelite lock unless you buy an external aerial .... maybe you should consider a mount similar to Garmin or the TomTom Live sucker mount that allows any angle and position. There are many commercial drivers I have spoken too have been put off buying your product because of the mounting problems in their vehicles!!!

By the way Elaine thanks for the offer of becoming a beta tester on your new products to be released its good to know your actually interested in your customers views rather than your own design teams "perfect" views. +++

All in all I have been delighted with what the unit does and how it looks,

and now I have one that works...very happy once more. +++:)

Read all the posts here and went ahead and purchased one with the optional laser detector.

So far, after 4 days it has been by far the best detector I have had.

Setup was simple, it picked up a signal even in my house and it comes on line in seconds when switched on in the morning.

I left it in the car in the sun on sunday in the works car park and had no heat issues at all.

It has picked up every local camera site I am aware of too.

I have also contacted Roadangel about a new mobile van site at junc 15 M40 and must say customer service was second to none.

The only trouble I have is getting it to fit on its base.

I will let you know how it goes in the future, good or bad.

Dave.

Drove to Aberdeen this weekend with stops off at Carlisle, Glasgow, Fife, Falkirk and Greenock.

So over a 1000 miles or in the S8 at shall we say average speeds. The Road Angel as usual warned me of all the fixed camera sites, no problems.

But it also warned me of all the possible mobile camera sites, which again is not a problem even though there has never been a mobile camera at a single location in all the time I have had the RA connected.

Now the really annoying bit...

It didn't warn me at all about the two actual mobile camera vans parked up on the A90 north towards Aberdeen and heading towards Falkirk from Aberdeen (don't know the road). So I have to say thanks to RA for providing the biggest piece of crap I've ever owned.

Mobile camera vans are usually only at a site for an hour or two - so the system relies on another Road Angel Connected user to pass that camera van and press the button triggering the database update that your device will recieve over the air - seriously, given the timeframes and number of users, what are the chances of that?

I just find it rather incredible in all my time of ownership that it has never successfully warned me of any mobile camera site that is actually live and misses the few that I have come across. So I guess it's a case of trust, I can't rely on it for mobile sites, might as well turn them off or go back to the Pogo Alert which was always more accurate despite what RA tell us.

if this is the case then eventually the unit wil be giving off constant alerts as sites are moved around. It does warn that increasing distances of mobile alerts can be misleading and eventually it will never stop beeping.

I wonder what they do with the database? If someone reports a live mobile site say on Monday morning, it gets distributed to all RAC's in the country or just that area? Then is that site removed from the database the next day or left in the database as a 'possible' site for a mobile camera?

Just returned from a week camping in Devon.

My unit pointed out every fixed camera I saw and various mobile sites with no van present.

It also pointed out various average speed camera sites to the nearest metre.

It locked on to sats immediately when switched on, never had any heat issues and the on board battery lasted 6 hours no problem.

I still have problems getting it to click on to its base though!

The mobile site info comes from what is published by police forces and what is phoned in by owners.

I phoned a new site on the A46 near Warwick in recently and it was added to the database immediately.

I still find myself 100% in the positive camp for the Connected.

Dave.

The RA Connected thing is a bit of a worry, I have had a 'Classic' since 2002 and the latest incarnation seemed an obvious choice.

Dash Mounts

I know this sounds daft but I found a nice big blob of Bluetak works a treat - better than anything else and best of all it doesn't leave a mark, doesn't go bonkers in the heat or give up in the cold...oh yes and its cheap too!
