Xenon headlight - adjustment for Europe - FIRST POST!!!!

Hi Guys

New to this particular forum, although I have been a member of various biking forums over the years - and know how valuable your advice can be!+++

Anyway, my first ever question here: I have a 2007 A6 with Xenon lights, and the book says that the dip can be adjusted to suit driving in Europe - but get the dealer to do the job. Right, OK, at dealer rates in Essex.......

I've done a search here and found various posts for cars such as the A3, Golf GTI etc., but does anyone know how to do this for an A6? Will the light unit be the same as these other cars?(assuming I can get near it on the first place!)? Has anyone actually done this for themselves?

Or should I use the stick-on things from Halfrauds - do they work with projector lights?

Thanks in advance.....

W

PS: I'll get around to a signature, car spec, photo in due course (need to clean the car first).

Hiya,

My task will be the opposite to yours whereby I've bought some Xenon original lighting from Audi Germany and will need to switch it to the UK style.

Bascially, the A6 lighting has a lever that adjusts it EU or UK style. The manual does not have it but if I get a chance later on today, I will dig out a few links that explain it. Apparently not too hard to do!

As for stickers, they are not suitable for xenon lighting from what I've been reading

Hiya, apologies for taking so long to reply. I completly forgot about this thread and I tend to browse forums without logging in so I didnt even see some of the private messages!

Firstly, to answer your question...

I have now fitted my xenons as of today and inside each unit is a lever.

You cannot miss it - a metal strip that you can simply push up/down

This is all you do to make it EU/UK. I will get back to you tomorrow once I know which is which though in your case move it to the opposite of what it is (and let me know to make my life easier too :-) )

Apologies once again, had a rough past 3 weeks with xenon fitting because everythings been going wrong...now onto a new post to get more help on the fitting!

Hi Akash

Thanks for taking the time to reply. Any further description on where the metal strip is? How do I get in in the first place - looks like I need to remove some air ducting of some description.

Good luck with yours - hope the installation has gone OK.

Cheers

Hey,

Sorry I was a bit vague!

Ok, I will try and explain as much as possible, failing that, tomorrow weather permitting, I need to rip the engine bay again so I can take a picture or two.

Drivers side:

You need to remove the airbox. Simply enough, two philips head screws in the front of the pipe above the headlight area I guess (black screws)

Two silver clips on the airbox itself, one is openly visible on the back right (if you are facing it from the front)

The second is a bit hidden under the part where the beginning of the pipe itself is

Flick them away and lift the top off.

The bottom of the airbox is also easy, just pull it off from the stud on the left of it. Oh, you need to remove the pipe to the bottom of the airbox itself, just a flat head screwdriver needed here, unscrew it a bit, twist the pipe off

And lastly, remember the connector on the airbox itself.

All in all, 5min job

This will give you all the room you need for the headlight. The cover just pops off (you will see the logic when you see it but its just clipped on)

When you do this, you will be able to see a metal strip going from top to bottom which you can flick up/down.

Up is driving on the left

Down is driving on the right

Taken from ELSA

Headlight (left-side):– If fitted, pivot the securing clip -1- for electrical connector to side.– Turn starter unit -2- for gas-discharge lamp anti-clockwise -arrow-.– Unplug electrical connector -3- at starter unit for gas-discharge lamp.– Remove starter unit for gas-discharge lamp.

Check position of adjustment lever -1- at both headlights.l Lever down = Driving on leftl Lever up = Driving on right– If necessary, swivel lever until it engages in desired position -arrow

Elsa actually has pictures too, PM me your email add and I will send you the details with pictures for the airbox, and light change

On the right side, mine has the power steering resovoir in the way, thats easy enough, just take out the bolt and move the res. to the side. whatever you do, ensure you grab the middle of the bolt, its a nut/spacer. Mine is currently rattling around on the bottom of the car because despite experience removing it a dozen times, I dropped it again :-)

What engine do you have just so I send you the exact details based on model.

I have an 03 reg A6 Avant 1.8t with Xenon's

1 Audi dealer told me to book the car in, 1 told me Audi did not support this old model any more. One of them told me they needed to connect the car to their computer.

Well, I read your instructions and have just in the space of 15m adjusted the lights (I found one leaver in the up position (( so much for MOT checks))). So with a set of latex gloves (and my reading glasses) I plan to adjust them on the Ferry / Tunnel. I had to remove the power steering cover (push fit) make sure you don't let the right clip come all the way forward as it gets trapped and is difficult to get back again. On the off side the cover and air trunking both popped out easily again no tools. There's less clearance here but if you do the near side first you can squeeze a finger in and know what you are doing.

Very useful info and thanks - saved me lots of time and possible money.

Cheers+++

Hi there and thanks for the post above. I have a 2010 Audi A6 avant Le Mans 3.0TDI and would like to know how to adjust my headlamps to driving on the right. I followed your instructions but got stuck trying to remove the airbox. I removed the first part but couldn't release the box after unclipping the to clips. Also, please can you tell me what ELSA is and perhaps can you send me any photos you have? Thanks in advance

Bob
