karen_karen
I have recently bought a mk4 2.0 GTI (2001) and the guy who sold it to me said that when you start the car, the 'oil sensor workshop' warning will appear on the trip computer and beep. He said that he hadn’t had the sensor replaced because he had been told that the trip computers can be temperamental and don't like to be messed around with. I don’t know if it's worth replacing the oil sensor if it's going to mess up the trip computer. Has anyone else experienced this problem or know of any issues with the trip computer? Any advice would be much appreciated. Karen
Rustynuts
I've a feeling that he didn't really know what he was talking about, or you perhaps misunderstood. Maybe he was saying that he didn't replace the sensor as he'd been told that it might in fact be the computer which is faulty. And to be honest I don't believe that anyway. Replacing the sensor won't affect the computer unless the guy doing it is a complete numpty and wires it up all wrong. A trip to a dealers (or a VAG specialist preferably) and a connect up to the computer will tell them what the fault is, and they'll be able to give you a diagnosis and an estimate for replacement of whatever is wrong. karen_karen
Thank you for your advice. If I replaced the sensor myself, would the warning clear or would I need to get it connected up to a computer to do that? Thanks
Rustynuts
You'll probably find that the error message stops showing, but the ECU will still have a fault code stored in the memory until it's cleared with Vag Com or a dealers computer system. Nothing to be concerned about though.
