I've just had a mk5 Golf Gt Sport and i,m looking at having an centre armrest retro-fitted.

I,ve been looking on this forum and found some threads on retro-fitment and that it can be done.

Does anybody know how much it would cost to have the armrest fitted and an ipod dock put in aswell.

Is there anybody on here that has had it done after purchase of the car and what advice can you offer.

Also is there anybody on here that can carry out the work for me.

Thanks+++

OK, Cost depends on if you want the air vents to actually work (ie blow air). My dad got several quotes a coiuple of weeks ago. Some garages were not prepared to fit it. However, He got the arm rest fitted for £178 in the end. It would have cost an extra £100 to have the vents working - I believe that more of the console / dash has to be taken apart to fit the duct.

Unfortunately I cannot comment on how much extra an Ipod dock would be. I should imagine that the cable would follow a similar route to the air duct so perhaps £280 + the cost of the Ipod connector cable.

It's worth ringing around a few dealers as some quote NHS rates whilst others are definitely BUPA! I believe you can also source the parts via ebay - chappy called DSG Wagen who I think is connected to a VW dealership in the Doncaster area (T Haseldon).

It may be worth contemplating fitting yourself - I understand that the armrest comes with instructions and VW reckon it's an hours job. Depends if you can be bothered / have the time I guess.

Good luck +++

As i,ve been quoted alot higher than that:(

vw quoted me 400 quid fitting with vents working. in addition to supply= 750 all together

I did it myself and it took 30 mins using the instructions with the kit from vagparts.co.uk, however the rear vents don't work in this scenario, but are in place for looks

Winchester Motor Co - Winchester, Hampshire.

They are now a Skoda franchise for new car sales but have maintained a proper branded and completely seperate VW service dept to cater for their loyal VW customers (they were previously VW dealers for new car sales for 15 years). Their prices are very reasonable and are cheaper than other surrounding dealers. Seem to be a genuine family owned business.

VW recommend a 1 hour labour charge for fitting the basic armrest (not vent duct) but I think some see it as an opportunity to make some serious ££££!

I rang Winchester Motor Co - Winchester, Hampshire and they were very helpful, and cheaper than my local VW garage, from where i purchased my Golf.

Too be honest i can't remember how much it was exactly for Winchester Motor Co. to fit the armrest and get the rear vents working(about £200 cheaper i think)

I also rang VW Doncaster, they actually were the cheapest, they quoted me to supply and fit the armrest and get the rear vents working £328 VAT included

As i live closer to Doncaster and they are cheaper, i am going to go there.

Also i have picked up a genuine ipod adapter for the arm rest at half price, so i am going to have that fitted at the same time, think it needs an interface cable from the stereo to the armrest, then it plugs in.

TOP TIP!!

If i was going to buy a brand new car, which i didn't! I would get the armrest factory fitted, its only about £150 more...allegedly!! much cheaper than retro fitting!

Thanks for the reply

Is the dealer T Haselden? If so they have been going many years. My dad bought vw's (Passats) from them when I was just a nipper.....I'm 37 now!

It definitely pays to shop around !

Good luck +++

Thanx for reply

Yes it is T Haselden, they were very helpful and are extremely competitive on their prices.

I'll definitely be using them+++

I'll keep you informed

The total cost fitted, including all parts except ipod interface was £420, the ipod interface cost me £100

My VW dealership wanted £840, Doncaster VW did it for £520

What does a retrofitted armrest look like?

I have a gti golf with beige interior and am looking into getting an arm rest retro fitted, but my mates say it looks crap.

It looks like original, as it is an oem retrofit. The only complication being colour match if your interior is dirty, faded.

I fitted it myself and it was incredibly straight forward, undo 2 screws and assemble using about 10.
