sapphire1616
On my 2002 S8 the parking sensors started making a permanent beep when they come on. Is the only remedy a trip to the stealers, and if so, what can I expect to be faced with.....if I am armed witha little knowledge it may stop me being fed a load of bullsh*t by them. I don't have any testing gear so apart from a sharp kick to each sensor in turn to see if it cures it, I am stuck!
RichardW
I had the same problem with my S8. The solution is a VAGCOM check - in my case the check showed that the front centre right sensor was faulty (I had guessed it might be that one because it had been hit by a stone or something). Bought a new sensor from the dealer and fitted it myself (probably saved £200!). My son NikW on this forum may be able to help you. We are in the same area as you and there is usually a tyresmoke meet at the Caldecotte Arms pub (South side of Milton Keynes) on the first Wed of each month. If he is going to be there, he or someone else at the meet would probably be happy to check your car with VAGCOM. Bumper removal is quite easy. sapphire1616
Thanks RichardW. Will try to get there so I can have it checked out. Don't fancy the stealers prices one little bit!
sapphire1616
I was at the stealers today, getting some top up oil, and they offered to check my sensors free of charge...couldn't say no, could I. They came back with the result that four are faulty, both front and rear ones. Considering this is the first time I have ever had a problem with them, is it feasible that four could have gone all at once, or does it not throw a wobbly until more than one has gone? Am I being taken for a plonker by the stealers?
IT_S8
They came back with the result that four are faulty, both front and rear ones. Eh? There are 8 sensors, 4 at the front and 4 at the rear, so if that was their exact report they they're being even more useless than normal. The individual sensors are common to fail at that age, and one of the benefits of the factory fit PDC over an aftermarket one is that you can use Vagcom to diagnose exactly which one isnt working. If one sensor is faulty you normally get a different beep when PDC goes on and the light starts to flash constantly. A solid beep is more unusual, so although i've never known a controller go bad, maybe it has in your case....
sapphire1616
Thanks for the guidance IT_S8. The problem started a week ago and the rear buzzer comes on as if you are very close to an object. It had been fine up to then and no indication of a problem. I have spoken to the Stealers to ask for more information on their findings.
Midsflyer
Hi all, Im a recent joiner on the forum. I have a 01 S8 and had a similar fault a few weeks back. Hard to believe but it occurred after i washed and polished the car. PDC's Just gave a long beep suggesting a fault. After a thorough wipe with the duster and a couple of days they started working again and have been fine since. Not sure what it was but thought i would add my two penneth worth - Good luck
Oli18
Hi, I bought my 2000 A8 and had to replace 5 sensors if it's any consolation... ...it can happen and they cost about £57 each excl VAT from what I remember. Simple to replace and vag-com easily spots it! Good luck, Oliver
Sven
I have one faulty one as well (centre left front sez VAG-COM), which causes the system to stop working completely. It gives a long beep when engaged, nothing more. I have to buy a replacement sensor one of these days, and ask my good friend to help me with the bumper... (it's a two man job I guess). A8_Tony
Back on thread now.....I have exactly the same problem. Sometimes VAG-COM clears the fault and all is ok, but it comes back. Must get myself a new sensor, and fit it. Before I damage the mota :D
Soundwave
I'm now getting a constant tone when I turn PDC on in the '6. It is a higher pitched, constant tone than usual and the LED flashes on the button. Does this sound like a dodgy sensor?
waynester2
It certainly does, get the fault read and it should tell you which one it is
Oscar1
Hello all. My rear parking sensors are giving a constant tone, which generally appears to happen after rain. It seems from what I've read on the forum that the sensors are a fairly common fault and to cure mine, at the moment, I've disconnected the sounder! Some of the comments refer to VAGCOM to identify which of them is faulty. I'm no mechanic so would appreciate it if someone could explan what this is, do I need to buy one or go to a local garage? Cheers
las247
Well mine has just started the dreaded beep of doom! Does anyone somewhere near Huddersfield fancy earning themselves a pint or two for a quick zap of the VAGcom? please
las247
I washed the car today and guess what it works again now
