Rich76
Hi, I'm looking to buy a set of Detroit alloys (the black powder coated Monza II wheels as optional on the Edition 30). Volkswagen Golf GTI | Long Term Tests | Car Reviews | Auto Express 3 quick questions: 1) Dealers aside, where else can I purchase these from new? 2) How much do you reckon the Pescara alloys are worth (nearly brand new, 300 miles only) 3) Possibly cheaper / more sensible to find a set of used 18 Monzas on eBay and get somebody very good to paint them up like OE Detroits... discuss? Thanks in advance :-)
JonC
Not sure where you'd get a set from outwith the dealers, but you should be able to able to get £700-£800 (in this climate) for the Pescara's I would have thought. RedRobin's thread may be of interest... http://www.tyresmoke.net/forum/vw-golf-gti-forum/110312-changing-finish-monza-iis.html
RedRobin
....I'm warming to the black 'Monza' design but only if a matt finish like the Detroits. I've seen a couple of GTI's in the flesh with shiny black Monzas and don't like those at all!

I've seen a couple of GTI's in the flesh with shiny black Monzas and don't like those at all! Yeah, shiny is not a good look. From the photos I've seen, the OE Detroits have a lovely satin finish. You get to keep the Monza design (still the best looking wheel on a Mk5, and OE for a reason) but with an Ed30 spin. Any links to OE suppliers you know of, Red? Edit: In a perfect world I'd like to find a place that would be interested in taking my Pescaras from me as part of a deal, but I appreciate that's not likely to happen for various reasons... RedRobin
....If they are powder-coat painted I'm wondering if that metal edge is exposed. I'm not sure how they would look on a red GTI....Hmm. I don't know any OEM suppliers at present - Would Google throw up anything useful?
Rich76
I may be biased, but I think they look best on TR cars! Google was, naturally, my first port of call but nothing yet. May just stump up the cash for a dealer order. Edit: VW Edition 30 - a set on Flickr Edited July 22, 2008 by Rich76
Tarmac_Terrorist
I didn't like the idea of black Monza's when they were first introduced on the European Ed30's. They have really grown on me and I now much prefer them to the UK ed30 Pescara's. I reckon they would look fine on a red car RR.

The contrast between the grey and diamond-cut alloy is awesome. The darker ones don't have these qualities. I do prefer them to the Pescara's though
