JimS8
I am thinking of getting Vag-Com to use with my 2001 S8, which I understand requires a HEX-USB+CAN lead. Can anyone offer any thoughts on where to get it from - direct from Ross-Tech in the US, from one of their distributors in the UK, or from somewhere else? According to the US Ross-Tech website it costs US$349, plus US$52.77 carriage, so about £216. According to Gendan's web site it's £ 259.95, carriage free. On the other hand, if the US-sourced item would attract import duty, it might work out dearer. Any advice would be much appreciated.
petsy
if you know someone in the US who can buy it for you then do so and let them post it in a padded envelope using USPS letter post as you will save alot in postage. All you get is the cable and a few sheets of paper. You have to download the software. Also depending how the item is declared on the customs declaration form, it may not attract import duty. PetrolDave
Also depending how the item is declared on the customs declaration form, it may not attract import duty. The suppliers do "try to help", but everyone I know who has bought the cable from the US has had to pay import duty (me included).

Rustynuts
The only import duty / tax payable is 17.5% VAT. So you take the US cost, add shipping, and pay Ross Tech that ammount. Then when it arrives in this country Customs will charge you 17.5% of that amount as VAT. The courier / mail company will often pay this for you and then invoice you seperately (and likely add a percentage to the total aswell).

And very often a 5% import duty as well as the tenner or so 'handling charge' you mention above. All subject to VAT of course...
