I ran across this on another site...don't know accuracy, can't tell the source.

But, based on this, I'm following this up with a subjective ROI (Return On Investment) for the teams on the drivers they invested in. See follow-up post.

F1 driver salaries revealed below are the salaries of all of this year's F1 drivers and the total amount

Driver Salary

Felipe Massa: €12,997,244.94

Jenson Button: €12,995,694.54

Crap formatting but can't figger out better...

My subjective Driver ROI (Return on Investment) rating based on equipment used (i.e., Ferrari>>>>Honda), race showing, race finish, and/or visible improvement during season (US broadcast). A race highlight (something to show a sponsor) scores higher than consistency (again, subjectively).

Driver ROI

Name/Salary

--> Highlight(s) & Notes

1) Sebastian Vettel: €599,662.56

--> Wins Monza with a lower 2nd tier car, drove car 140%

2) Robert Kubica: €4,498,467.20

--> Almost consistent top 3 finisher in a car with small operating “sweet” spot.

3) Lewis Hamilton: €11,496,521.15

--> Won Championship, cameras and FIA tracked him everywhere, screwed up too many times to be higher.

4) Felipe Massa: €12,997,244.94

--> Nearly won Championship, would’ve won if not for team and his errors. Cameras tracked him everywhere.

5) Fernando Alonso: €14,994,746.84

--> Won races with 2nd tier car, drove car 110%+

6) Timo Glock: €1,299,489.80

--> consistent showing, drove car 100%, almost matched his teammate for comparative chump change, definitely worth >>1/6 of Trulli

7) Nelson Piquet Jr: €1,999,245.66

--> Nearly won two races as a rookie in a 2nd tier car, I remember more of him that I do my favorite party driver who is...

8) Kimi Räikkönen: €17,992,788.45

--> Should’ve done better than his teammate. My favorite party driver only used car 85%, can & should retire on his 18M and in his bear suit to open up a seat *unless he decides to race*.

9) Sebastien Bourdais: €1,299,413.04

--> Emerged late in season when he outdrove his pay and occasionally his car.

10) Heikki Kovalainen: €2,999,025.85

--> Should’ve done much better with a top tier car.

11) Adrian Sutil: €249,686.78

--> would’ve placed 4th at Monaco in a bottom feeder car if Kimi hadn’t punted him

12) Nick Heidfeld: €7,497,597.45

--> should’ve done much better, disappeared in field too much, almost put him behind Trulli

13) Jarno Trulli: €7,996,671.50

--> Occasionally outdrove his 2nd tier car, only behind Hide-in-the-Field due to half his driver’s points.

14) Kazuki Nakajima: €649,835.19

--> A few highlight flares-to-flameouts for a mid-pack car

15) Mark Webber: €5,997,998.65

--> bested his higher paid teammate too many times.

16) Nico Rosberg: €2,499,032.89

--> definite highlights but didn’t do 4x his teammate; he wasn’t his father’s worth this year

17) Giancarlo Fisichella: €399,779.00

--> cheap pay for a moving obstacle

18) David Coulthard: €8,495,871.69

--> too much pay for the return, should retired after '07 season, sad ending to a long career.

19) Rubens Barrichello: €7,997,921.44

--> steep pay for a moving obstacle

20) Jenson Button: €12,995,694.54

--> steepest pay for a moving eco-obstacle

How can he finisher higher?

18) David Coulthard: €8,495,871.69

--> too much pay for the return, should retired after '07 season, sad ending to a long career.

IIRC, he helped the team quite a bit, with his experience

19) Rubens Barrichello: €7,997,921.44

--> steep pay for a moving obstacle

20) Jenson Button: €12,995,694.54

--> steepest pay for a moving eco-obstacle

:roflmao:

Talking of moving obstacles I was at Honda F1 the other day and the amount of money/effort that they spend to achieve very little is beyond belief. The whole place is like an operating theatre, seriously, the level of cleanliness alone was unbelievable.

They are seriously on a mission for next season apparently.

How can he finisher higher?

- Win the Championship by his driving skills,

- not punt into Kimi at a stop light

ABSOLUTELY! As I'm sure my other favorite drivers Reubens and Jensen did theirs.

But that wasn't part of the ROI considerations which were what attracts eyeballs and therefore sponsors.

From what I've seen, they're all like that +++

But I thought F1 drivers were paid in US$...?

Like Cruiser67 infers, the €:US dropped from the beginning of the year ($1.57 = €1, irrc), £ was almost worth $2...

So the figures are all to cock then. If they're paid in US$, the figures from whoever should be in US$ +++.

Full disclosure:

1) I figure these numbers were run thru 'that day's' currency converter at least 2x already so...

B) ...I wasn't doing it again, adding to the currency swap error.

III) I'm at *least* 6 steps away from the original snitch source...and who knows where they came from before that.

... most every driver this year fecked up in some way or other.

Yup! Just giving some examples. I actually expected more argument w/ my ratings...

Just thought it'd be a fun exercise...

Cheers! +++

I was offered a drive with McLaren but I turned it down :coffee:

Those buggys are hard to squeeze your ar$e into I guess!

Maybe a better question would be who impressed the most on their way to F1. Surely Lewis was one of the top drivers on his way up, especially if you compare his results to his team mate.

Sh*t yes, I spelt it wrong - it was Maclaren :rolleyes:

Re your other comment, Hamilton was "groomed" by McLaren. Kovaleinen wasn't.

Prize for "most groomed" driver would go to Hamilton, but the prize for most talented in 2008 wouldn't, despite his winning the title, simply because some very talented drivers are in worse cars.

Actually, Heidfeld and Bourdais were the ones I muddled over most.

I hear ya...& I gave a pass to Bobby Kubiça for his few bad showings but, in the end, I felt Heidfeld hid-in-the-field too much w/ the same equipment.

But, yes, Spa and Silverstone drives were awesome! +++

Thought Heidfeld deserved a higher spot.

Spa and Silverstone were aweseom drives!

  • 5 months later...

Well, Vettel seems to be well the bargain of the past two years. I hear that money isn't his driver, negotiates his own contracts with one lawyer/solicitor...

Button and Barrichello were earning their money behind the scenes...paying off now.

Hey, Mook, were you offered the Renault seat before last weekend? ;)

Don't forget that Button took an approx 50% pay cut for this season. Looks a bargain now and he is driving very well indeed. +++

Not so bad after all is he. :)

I'll be the first to admit it I got him him wrong and I'm pleasantly surprised how good both him and Rubens are doing.

I thought Brawn should have taken the risk with Senna but I guess he won't have the experience to develop the car
