Nelson_R32
[Rusty arrives somewhat tardily] Can't believe I've missed out on all this! I saw the thread at the top of the list many times, but thought to myself "Nah, Lexus! Who really cares...." Anyway, I doubt I'll ever have the inclination to buy a Lexus, but having seen all this going on I'd be tempted to take a test drive. Yes indeed! After all, the van needs to go in for a new starter motor, and I really could do with some free transport while that happens. A free Lexus for a couple of days would do nicely thank you, with the added bonus of p!ssing off another "up his own arse"* dealer to boot. *this assumes that said dealer actually has an arse to be up, and does not extend to the service department or certain parts departments, but is limited exclusively to smug sales jockeys who have the unfortunate luxury of being entitled as "executives" when everyone knows that the bloke in the office who they keep running off to talk to is the real deal maker. The names have been changed to protect the ignorant, and any similarity to person or persons alive or deceased is entirely at your own risk. No communications will be entered into regarding defaced or illegible conversations, unless expressly informed beforehand that the conversation is (or may be) recorded for the purposes of stitching the customer up when the sh!t hits the fan. Your mileage is irrelevant. Or words to that effect. Receptionist; "I'm sorry Sir. But we are unable to offer you a test drive today as all our Salesmen are busy arguing with people on the internet." Nelson_R32
To be fair, I'd rather have a Mondeo than an A4.... To be honest, theres a bit of me that actually agrees with you on this. If I were comparing a bog standard Mondeo verses the same spec A4 I would seriously consider the Mondeo. It's not until you start talking S-line that the new A4 pushes my buttons; I can't believe they made the standard model that 'normal' and the wheel range on the SE model is quite frankly depressing. It's a shame really because underneath that you've got the best B-segment car Audi has ever made. Lets hope they change the wheel range soon or it'll be a long wait for the facelift! Edit: Damn, am I out of a job now like LEXUS-MAINDEALER? Edited December 23, 2008 by Nelson_R32
Soapsuds
I'm still amazed by the barrage of shhhhhiiiiittte that has also come out of some long-term-posters on this site. Defending BMW / Audis to the hilt having never been close enough to a Lexus to pass REAL judgement. Very amuzing!! Makes great reading!! There really are some ultra-strong brand lovers out there!!! Having owned a few Toyotas, 2 x BMWs, 1 Audi, currently a Subaru and my family having owned 2 x Lexus RXs that i have driven a fair few miles, i dont get it at all. Pretty much all cars have up sides and down sides and this blinkered approach amazes me. Well, makes me giggle more than anything On a lighter note, its a great thread. Really does bring back the McCombie memories!! Lets hope he comes back from his Christmas holidays in S****horpe in a similar mood.

Seriously though. The reason I'd never buy a Lexus (in particular an IS200) is because it offers nothing new to the segment like BMW and Audi do when a new model is launched. In technology terms it uses wood in a fibreglass world. You just need to compare the A4 and IS200 press releases to see where I'm going with this. The B8 A4 brought Drive Select, Dynamic Steering, Audi lane assist, adaptive cruise control to the B-segment*. The IS200 brought ESP that can you can turn off by pressing the brake pedal a few different ways.....wow, just wow. Sorry, but everyone knows that Lexus build solid luxury cars and that may be all that some people want when you pushing 60 and don't care about cars anymore. But not me. I think it boils down to if you love your cars you buy a BMW, Audi or Mercedes, if you tollerate your cars you buy a Lexus. *Granted, 99.9% of people won't order these options. But there are other improvements such as clever weight saving and valvelift which is what you pay for. Mook
While we're on the subject of Lexus, please can someone explain the logic behind the different models - surely there must be some. Citroen have got C1, C2, C3, C4 etc. Peugeot have got 107, 207, 307 etc. BMW have got 1 series, 3 series, 5 series etc. But why Lexus IS, GS, LS and RX? SC = sports coupe I guess, but what about the rest?

theduisbergkid
Has LMD gone to Benidorm in his Football shirt then then ? Right, how about a TSN meet over Chrimbo at Silverstone, everyone must turn up in a Lexus (any one of 'em) from the "free 48 hour test drive" promo, I'll pay for the tracktime, slowest lap (*ahem* that'll be Tipex) can buy the beers afterwards. Seriously, as funny as this thread has been in places, if he is a Main dealer car salesman, they are doomed - the damage he has done ! Right then : Silverstone, put your name down - Duisberg + 1 - driving a RX400h in that hideous earwax beige colour they all seem to come in. Sounds like standard corporate spin to me I agree that "A highly refined sense of hospitality has been important in Japanese culture", having spent a long time working with Japanese companies, experiencing their hospitality first hand. It's a shame that one of the most important aspects of Japanese culture - respect - is lacking in the UK.

Mook
Well the Toyota/Lexus Hybrid Synergy Drive is a fairly significant one. (Even if it isn't actually that great yet. ) What about that hydrogen/electric car that Jame May reviewed on TG last week? I reckon that's a step further forward than the Lexus option Put the Toyota Pious to one side, Lexus only seem to put the hybrid system into their more powerful cars. Is this because a hybrid on it's own with a small engine isn't marketable or just too slow?
