Metalex
On sunday, I'm probably going with my brother-in-law to look at a used 2006/06-plate Golf GT 1.4TSI . The dealer says it's a 170PS version, but are there any visual clues that will confirm this? Am I right in thinking the 170PS was introduced initially, followed by the 140PS version later on? If so, I'm not entirely sure when this was and whether it was after 06 plates or not. I believe when the 140PS versions were made available, VW introduced a black grill surround and darkened rear windows to the 170PS version. Right? Apart from that, are there any other well known problems to look out for with the GT/TSI models? Cheers Edited December 5, 2008 by Metalex
Tarmac_Terrorist
Hi Metalex, I bought a 1.4 TSI Sport (140ps) new on a 56 plate 2.5 years ago. I subsequently sold it to my parents. The 140 & 170 were introduced at the same time on what was then called the 'Sport' rather than the GT. The Sport had the normal golf front end. It was about 6 months later when the GT was intoduced with a similar front end to the GTI. U'm not aware of any visual differences between the two 140 & 170 model. All I can say is that I was very impressed with the 140ps model. It had a decent turn of speed and was up with most other typical 2 litre rep mobiles whilst producing 42mpg all day long. Plenty of in gear flexibility too (torque).
Matt R
Easiest way of checking is the 170 has a GTI style rear xhaust visible, the 140 doesnt have a visible exhaust.
Metalex
Cheers guys. The car we are going to look at is definitely a GT. It has the GTI style front bumper and has the twin exhaust which indicates it is the 170 model. Matt, I think you are definitely right about the exhaust thing - I found a review of a 140 GT TDI and it didn't have the twin exhaust, although I think the review was from when they had introduced the GTI black grill surround and darkened rear windows on the 170 model. Metalex
Matt, when the 1.4TSI was launched, was the GT only available with the 170 TSI at first? In other words, when did the 140 TSI become available in the GT? I didn't think it was available in the GT initially, but only in the Sport model. robsales
Bad news man.Hope something turns up soon. What engine code code he look for in the 170 model handbook/service book? Not sure to be honest and cant look into it now, sorry! another way to tell is a 170 has turbo boost gauge on dash in place of temp gauge(or is that just on a later GT Sport??? MattR can u put me right on that one?)
Rustynuts
Bad news man.Hope something turns up soon. What engine code code he look for in the 170 model handbook/service book? Engine code for the 170 variant is BLG, while the 140 is BMY.
