mf11
Hi all, been at the Stealers for a 50k service and my Mk4 has come back with a list of things that need done, all at astronomical prices as you can imagine. Two in particular are the need for two new rear springs and a Haldex service. A bit of help if possible: Thinking of getting the lowered H&R springs front and rear - are these any good? I think they lower the car 20mm front and 25mm rear - is this likely to give me any issues? On the Haldex side, is this something a non-franchised garage could service for me or is it really a Dealers only thing? Lastly, any help with an R32 friendly garage in Central Scotland would could do the above at reasonable cost be appreciated. Cheers, Mike.
Henry52
I can't really understand why it needs a Haldex service at 50k. As far as I know it's oil and filter change every 40k, some people do an extra oil change at 60k. It's not a specialist VW only service any competent independent can do it. I done mine on the driveway last week the oil and filter was around £20. As for the springs can't really help as I have H & R coilovers but H&R or eibach have good reputations and you'll probably get a full set for the price of two VW rears. jimmyp
Just out of interest if you didn't already no the springs on the mkiv .:R32 are H&R just with the VWRacing stamp on them+++
Gti_Fly
Haldex oil and filter can be changed by any garage, but they do need to have the haldex filter spanner to be able to get to the filter! Specialist VW places should be able to do it, and some Skoda Garages have been known to do Haldex servicing cheaper than VW. Haldex Oil should be done every 20,000, and the filter should be changed at 40,000. I get mine done every 20,000 just to be safe. In terms of the springs, I'd just go with 2 new rear VW ones. one of my rear ones cracked around 60,000 miles and I went the whole hog and went for KW V3 coilovers, but in hindsight I should have just replaced the rear springs with OEM ones. JonC
edit.. Lastly, any help with an R32 friendly garage in Central Scotland would could do the above at reasonable cost be appreciated. Whereabouts is you're nearest town/city, Mike? There's a very good VW place (service only) in Edinburgh which is noticeably more economical than the stealers. mf11
Cheers guys. Think I'll just go for the normal rear springs and my friendly local garage if the Haldex service is as simple as it sounds. Where does one precure a Haldex filter spanner? Cheers, Mike. JonC
Not sure how they compare to stealer prices, but perhaps try VW Parts.
