Autoglym V's Meguiars

I've read through quite a few posts on this forum and no one seems to mention Autoglym, apart from the blade. Is there a reason for this? I have quite a substantial range of cleaning products from Autoglym and have never really had any complaints. However I have never tried Meguiars.

Has anyone compared the two and changed over to using Meguiars instead. Is it a lot better?

Could you give me your opinions on this, before I fork out any dosh.

Cheers smile.gif

Haven't used the Meguiars shampoo yet as I'm still working my way down a large bottle of Autoglym.

However, I have tried both Autoglym Super Resin Polish/Extra Glass stuff and the Meguiars 3-stage system (cleaner/polish/wax).

Have to say that to my eyes it's very difficult to tell the difference, although people will come on here later and tell you that the Meguiars definitely brings out a much deeper shine.

The Meguiars stuff doesn't leave a white residue like the Autoglym, but as Gaunty says, I've found both as easy to use. I did, however, find that it was difficult to get the Autoglym to buff off completely on my dark (Ming Blue) car. The effect was that in bright sunlight (only) you could see different shades (clouding/swirls) of the polish. I haven't noticed that with the Meguiars, although I don't think it was particularly sunny on the day I polished. One other thing is that the Meguiars appears to last longer - the water still beads up easily all over the car even though it's over 4 months since I polished and waxed it.

As Gaunty also says, Bushy makes it easy to get Meguiars at a reasonable price, to I'll probably stick with that.

Thx for the reply. I've always used turtle zip wax shampoo prefer that to the autoglym. But regarding the poilsh/wax, I definately like the sound of no white residue left over, my cars dark blue also. I've also noticed the haze left over from Autoglym on a sunny day, just takes that little bit more effort and plenty of fresh polishing cloth to buff it off. Think I'll give the Meguiars a try. I'll persuade the girlfriend it would be a nice present off her for my birthday. grin.gif

this is how i got into this mess

i originally used Autoglym, washed twice weekly polished using super resin ever other weekend

This was the only way i found i could keep the cars looking really clean - black 206GTi - Mrs Lady and the silver RS

I had heard good stuff about Meguiars and while at GTi International bought some from a stand

Well the difference on my wifes car was outstanding, much deeper shine, no swirl marks, no white dust etc

SO i rang them and tried to buy in bulk, i then ended up opening a trade account and it is now a littel side line

So i really do genuineingly think it is superior to Autoglym

And now i wash once a week and must admit haven't polished/waxed for about 3 months

The car comes up like new each time i wash

Outstanding

Don't knock the Turtle. I've got some of their Emerald Series Carnauba Wax, excellent stuff would recommend anyone give it a try cos it wipes off so easy, easier than Maguiars or anything else I've used. I treat it to Maguires when I want to spend a time over getting a really nice finish.

What p*sses me off about Autogylm is the white dust/lines on my Ming(ing) Blue paint

Advantages of Autoglym Polish Vs Meguiars IMO:

1. No white residue when buffing

2. Faster to apply and remove

3. Slightly better shine... but

4. More importantly, a much longer lasting shine

All in all Meguiars generally produce better products, but I do prefer the Autoglym Clean Wheels to the Meguiars stuff, cause I think the Meguiars stuff is a rip off. Used the whole bottle within a month, the Autoglym stuff does the same job, if not better and lasts much longer.

Moff,

Agree with all you've said, and I'm not saying you're wrong on this one but I think the Meguiars Alloy Wheel Cleanin stuff is brilliant and added with the fact that its non-acidic, at least I know my wheels wont be peeling in the future..

Try and get a gallons worth off Bushy, costs about £15 IIRC and last ages since you can still water it down (I dont, mind you). I've noticed that if you buy the Alloy wheel cleaner that comes in that squirty bottle thingy, a lot of it goes to waste as the squirt bottle is not that good.. Find one that squirts it evenly and I guarantee it'll last longer..

Now Bushy... do I get more discounts next time.. tongue.gifgrin.gif

15 squids for a gallon is pretty good! Costs £6 or £7 for the normal bottle blush.gif

The Meguiar's stuff did do a good job when a jet sprayed today though. Sprayed a 1/4 of the bottle on my matt 'gunmetal' looking alloys grin.gif before, and all the muck came off with a quick spray, that impressed me.

Is the Autoglym stuff acidic? If it is I will use an alternative.

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't saying it was s**t at what it does only, I have gone through a bottle soooo quickly. The gallon deal sounds very tempting though.

Moff, the Autoglym Alloy Wheel Cleaner is acidic. It even advises you on the bottle to water it down if you're going to use it frequently.

I was using it fairly regularly, but then I whipped my wheels off, thoroughly cleaned and waxed them (with Autoglym SRP *and* WheelWax - talk about overkill). This makes it a lot easier to get the brake dust off. Think it needs repeating every couple of months, 'cos I now have to sponge off the dust rather than just pwoer-wash it off, but it's still easier than it used to be and the wheels come up really shiny once washed.

I have stopped using the meguiars one since using wheelwax

also been talking to the wheelwax importer who recommends doing a double coating before track days

sounds good advice

i still use the meguiars gallon stuff on the wifes car, i water it down 3/2

Also note the gallon stuff is from the trade range and IMHo is better value

Please note this doesnt include carriage

But i think it is worth the money

Tried Meguiars last summer, it made a beautiful job of the car. I then went to work (offshore for 2 weeks), when I came back, the car was virtually matt. I don't know what happened to it but it looked like someone had coated the car in wax & forgot to buff it off.

I applied Meguiars again & the same thing happened again. I've never had this happen with Autoglym, so I'm afraid that the Meguiars went in the bin!

It looks like Meguiars is the best if you are able to clean your car regularly, but in my situation Autoglym is the best. I apply it every 6 months & the car looks fine.

In between waxings I use Carplan Jetgloss to keep the car shining. You just hose it onto the car after washing it & dry it off again. It leaves a finish like glass.
