dooley
Evening! Now that my VW polo GTi 1.6 (2000) is officially back on the road I am seriously considering sprucing it up a bit. Its basically still as it was when it was first manufactured, Im only the second owner. My next dilema is should I spruce it up or leave it as it is? I kinda like the 'classic' feel it has to it but then I see others who have added to their polo gti and think wow! Its silver and still has the original 6 disc changer in the boot, alloys it came with etc.....duno, what should I do? Bearing in mind I am pretty much new to all this??? Thanks! Mook
Leave the car looking completely standard and make it go faster. That's the only option
m4ttm4son
Trouble is, the GTi engine doesn't have a great deal of scope for more powah.

Mook
Talk to the guys at APS - they'll be able to give you an idea of what you'll need to spend on it. You're not going to get a massive hike in power/torque, because it's a naturally aspirated car, but you should be able to get another 10 bhp or so out of it without any problems by adding a decent exhaust and air filter. Mouse
A BMC air filter (£150), Powerflow exhaust (£350?) and Raceland Manifold (£120?) should see power up to around 135-140bhp. Considering it's been tuned by VW already, and it's an N/A engine that is still quite respectable (ignoring Hondas) and it also increases the torque. A remap and cams can see you up to 170 bhp. S1600 cars were based on this engine with a head from a 1.4 iirc and were making over 200bhp N/A. The trouble is the gearbox won't take it and ideally you would want to take it to a specialist to upgrade the bearings etc. Depends how much you want to spend. Stying wise keep it OEM+. I sold my 15" RX II's and bought 16" RX's and lowered it 60mm all round and it looks great. Also got a chrome VW badge on the rear from the new Beetle, aero wipers - just little touches like that. Coilovers are recommended. Handling is underrated on standard suspension but coilovers transformed it, my car was a lot more chuckable in the corners and you are more comfortable on the limit because you know what's going on. You get a really crap ride mind you though
