hi guys...about to take the plunge i think...

could you just give me some thoughts/advice about tinted windows/privacy glass for the back windows and rear window on a b7 a4 avant.

how much will it cost to get this done (to a very good standard)?

is it easily done?

any tips etc etc very welcome, gents

much appreciated

I got my S4 Avant done by a professional outfit. 80% from the B pillar back and 20% on the front side windows, which technically made them illegal, because the S4 windows already have a 20% tint as standard, but, because of the rear tints, it didn't look that obvious. Total cost was £280.

I can't see the pic. [edit now I can!!] I'm really interested also.

I had a B8 Avant around last night with tints. It looked good and was quite subtle but I'm still not convinced of the look when the fronts are clear.

I'm wondering if it's worth speccing considering I'm already having the rear blinds for the kids.

I think it is. IIRC, the factory rear tints are only 60%, but I would still recommend getting the front ones done at a 20% tint (your new toy will have low %ge tints as an S-Line) to make them a little shade darker.

Just so you know, I was stopped a couple of times by the police (standard roadside inspections, not speeding etc!) and they never questioned the front tints. It's just when muppets get them completely blacked out (and can't feckin see out of them!) that the law insist on them being removed.

I have the factory tints (privacy glass) on my B7 Avant S-Line. The look takes a little getting used to if you've never had it before - but it's great for the kids in the back, as I don't need to mess about with ugly teddy bear sunshades!

It makes the interior a little darker, obviously, but well worth it IMO.

The only disadvantage for me is that when people want to wave at the kids in the back (like grandparents etc!) the kids are merrily waving away, but noone can see them!

I agree. +++

I have the factory fit rear blinds too and would still recommend the privacy glass. It all adds up and keeps the kids shaded in the rear.

I also have a black interior and black headlining. I suppose it does darken the interior, but not so much that I've given it any consideration.

My Galaxy has tinted glass and to be honest, I wish it didn't.

It looks great, and yeah it's good for the kids, but at night it's a right pain in the ar5e, you cant see a bloomin thing out the back, I might as well be driving a panel van for all the visibility I get.

I suppose if it wasn't a taxi I'd be doing a lot less night driving though, so the compromise would be worth it.

It's a tough choice. There are pros and cons. My worry is that somewhere down the line you'll want tinted windows. You'll go through the hassle of getting recommendations for fitters, then multiple quotes, then having the films applied. You may always wish you'd had the 'proper stuff', i.e. factory fit privacy glass, in the first place. :ffs:

Just had a thought - do you think insurance companies favour factory fit privacy glass over aftermarket tints when calculating premiums?
