Newbie S8 fault help

Hi to everyone,

I've just bought a '00 S8 in the last week, got a bit excited after the test drive and forgot to check a few bits on the car which has now come back to bite me!

It might be easier if I list them:

1) The CD Multichanger is knackered. The Head unit is showing the cd's are still playing even with the multichanger removed from the car. Any ideas to fix it or upgrade it?

2)The rear brake caliper is probably seized which the seller told me was fixed (It passed its MOT before the sale). Is there a caliper upgrade (Brembos?) for the rear that will fit on the standard discs?

3) Finally, the car has what seems to be an aftermarket aerial fitted on the rear which is not doing the radio or me any favours. The audio guy I went to see thinks the kit is either retrofit or there may have been another fault as the original antenna should be built into the rear screen. Is this right and is there anything I can do?

Sorry to be a pain on my first post but the car is brilliant and I just want it to be spot on.

Any help will be greatly appreciated

Cheers

Hi TheBlueWhale and welcome to tyresmoke A8 Forum!

Someone will be along to help with 1 and 2 shortly but 3 sounds like the stock mobile phone aerial which is located on the nearside rear wing and is about 12 inches high with a sprial wind? If it is this then some have removed who dont like the look (I dont have it on my car as it was not fitted from factory with the mobile option) but most choose to leave it stock Hope this helps :)

1) It wouldnt be the first - Easiest to just swop the changer out. I think we have a few in stock.

2) The calipers frequently seize. Upgrading them probably wont increase their lifespan, and if its more stopping power you want, start with the front, there are far more gains to be had

3) After approx 2000 the Tv and radio aerials (4 of them) are built into the edge of the rear screen. If you have a whip type aerial, then its for the Audi factory fit hands free phone. There is chance though on a 2000 plate, if you didnt have phone preperation that you have in fact got (or had) an standard electric aerial, which are prone to failure. It may be that someone has replaced this with a bodge up. Post a photo and we'll confirm either way +++

Though.. if the head unit thinks the changer is there, even when removed, I'd suspect that it may be faulty (or there's a wiring problem).

Fair comment, I'd mis-read that as being a problem when the cartridge was removed...

If the problem is happening with the whole cd changer removed, then thats a whole new can of worms !

Thanks for your quick replies.

PsYcHe, I have removed the multichanger from the car and I can still change discs with the head unit but I don't hear anything. I have just found out that the previous owner had an ipod connection which has been removed. So, until I can remove the head unit and see what has happened I'm a bit stuck.

That looks like the stock radio arial mate.

My one was also replased by the owner befor me with a badley fitted aftermarket one.

It gets signal but the motor gose mad and it is held in with duck tape:eek:

I think it would be best to get a good Audi second had one or new.

IT_S8, have you got any spare?

Welcome to TNS fella+++

Ah... Very possible the iPod connector setup has jumpered a signal line to make the head unit think there's a CD changer there. It's a 2-minute job to take the head unit out using the tools (available at Halfrauds) and have a look behind.

Indeed it is, and you'll be looking for a small blue square connector that is hanging down hopefully with about 9 pins - That would be your CD changer lead from the boot.

Hopefully, that is all in tact and someone hasn't butchered it for the ipod thing...

Remove the other blue connector, and reinsert old one, would be the ideal solution....

IT S8

I have attached a pic of the aerial. Will this be for the phone, radio or both?

That looks like an aftermarket attempt at replacing the factory electric aerial for the radio.... its defo not standardard as the genuine Audi ones didnt come up that high, and they wern't black +++
