Bonnet won't close

Hi,

Pretty annoyed.

Been working away in London for 2 weeks and got back yesterday to my wife and GTI :-)

Anyhow just about to go out for a drive, and washer fluid light came on, so I thought I'd fill it up, as you do.

Anyhow to cut a long story short, the bonnet now won't close.

Normally i just leave it drop as per the manuals instructions and it catches and locks. Just seems to bounce back and just catches with the secondary clip instead so its open about 1 inch or so I guess.

Does anybody have any ideas as to why its not closing?

Can't see anything obvious and without knowing what it looked like before I can't tell whether or not anything is missing - nothing in the floor that I can see. Have also sprayed with WD40 just in case, but still not closing.

Don't want to drive the car like this, as its probably not safe, and I can imagine very man and his dog flashing me to tell me its open.

Still under warranty to March 09 (as they are now closed this afternoon and Sunday), I can't speak to anyone other than a sales man. Do you think this will be a problem under warrenty to fix?

Cheers

Rowley

Thanks Snoopy, yeah checked that (as it used to do it on my old polo as well).

However it is all the way back in, but there does appear to be some "give" in it, quite loose, so maybe there is something wrong with the cable - assuming they just use cables these days?

Mate

Same thing happened to me after the dealer cleaned the engine compartment.

I'll bet the locking cam is stuck - look in the hole where the bonnet catch fits. Stick a smallish screwdriver in and you will probably be able to flick the cam back into its normal position. It took me ages to work out what was wrong.

Hope this helps.

Cheers, just had a play, but still not joy.... Catch seems to be in the right position, it just doesn't seem to be going down once the bonnet trigger (metal loop) hits it...

will try and get a pic tomorrow when its light and see what it looks like compared to others....

dammit, doesn't look like an easy fix and no doubt dealership will palm me off with some distant date, but i can't drive the car like this....

Update: Called the AA instead and he has sorted it

Basically the locking mechanism had seized (probably as per Kazmart has said), but not obvious as you couldn't see it, as it was hidden in the seized position.

AA guy just basically lubricated it and got a piece of wire in and started jigging things about - it looked a bit rusty to me as well. I guess this time of year with all the crap being thrown at the front of the car and me leaving it standing for 2 weeks, I can understand why it happened.

Anyhow, panic over and at least I don't have to resort to VW Warrington to try and fix it, useless as they are.

Cheers for advice and guidance

Thanks
