Bluelion
Hello folks, Blooming clutch has just begun to slip (I think?), I'm a bit disappointed that it only lasted 65k miles - my previous VR6 was still going strong clutchwise at 130k. I'll blame it on one of the previous owners for now to make me feel better. I'm running a mk4 with mild mods est. around 260hp (manifold, cats, exhaust, BMC CAI and AMD remap). I'm considering further upgrades if we ever get out of this recession, possibly FI or cams, haven't really made my mind up yet. Given changing the clutch seems to cost a small fortune in labour let alone the price of the part, I'm wondering if now would be a good time to upgrade to something a little stronger? Has anyone got any recommendations? I don't want something extreme, the car spends a considerable amount of time stuck in traffic, but if there was something a little stronger than the standard clutch that would be great. I'll give APS a ring tomorrow, just wondered if anyone has any recommendations on here? Cheers, Chris.
Bluelion
ok nevermind, sorted now APS is sorting me out with a nice Sachs uprated clutch, should do the job nicely. Roll on forced induction :D
Henry52
If you don't mind me asking how much is the new clutch fitted and how does that compare with the standard clutch price. I've just passed the 60k mark
Bluelion
If you don't mind me asking how much is the new clutch fitted and how does that compare with the standard clutch price. I've just passed the 60k mark I'll tell you in 10 days time Henry! Apparently (and this fits in with what I'm experiencing) the clutch itself might not be at fault - but the hydraulics have a tendency to weep and loose pressure. This results in a high clutch bite point - which is certainly the case on mine. If you've got to get to this part in the gearbox it makes sense to replace the clutch at the same time (and after 65k they reckon it will be pretty worn anyway). Problem with dual-mass flywheels are that they might also need replacing, which is going to cost an extra £550ish. They won't know that until they open her up, fingers crossed its ok I really don't need that sort of additional expense atm.
Henry52
Thanks for the quick reply, I can't believe the clutch would be so worn as to have nackered the duel mass flywheel as well. I hope for the sake of your pocket that it's ok. Cheers Henry
jimmyp
The flywheels arnt that strong and can come loose quite easily with some enthusiastic driving, not that i no of course..:roflmao:
Dan32
There's a post on vortex talking about the flywheel and how it breaks. I think it has something to do with a dust shield getting hot and warping. Be interesting to hear about the clutch if u have to go down that route. I know it's probably way too expensive but in some ways it's a shame you can't fit a quaife or peloquin LSD at the same time. I drove VWRacing's mkv GTi with 330bhp recently and the LSD transformed it. Probably £1200- 1500 fitted though!

Oh don't tell me that, I'm praying the flywheel will be ok! The APS lads have said they'll pull the gearbox off and inspect the flywheel for play. I don't think I'm particularly rough with the gearbox so I'm hoping it will be ok, but of course I have no idea what the previous owners were like, and the bite point has always been on the high side from the day I bought it. Having said that the labour costs are a good proportion of the cost of the flywheel, so if the fly is at all marginal I'll ask for it to be replaced. APS (Andy I think I spoke to?) said that this clutch is still very useable with the standard dual mass flywheel. Its only when you put a single mass one on it becomes a bit aggressive. There seems to be a few lads on r32oc which seem happy with it, and running Turbos, so I'm hoping its substantially stronger. Guess I'll find out in a week
