dww
Hello, I've not been lurking on this board for a while, and have recently had to replace my '99 D2 A8 after a lady randomly drove into the side of me and wrote it off :-( Anyway, I took the opportunity to trade up to an 05 A8. It has had the firmware updated so that TMC works, but when I asked the dealership whether they could install the newest firmware, and whether that would enable 3D maps on the navi system they were a bit vague. They will install firmware updates, but would charge about £200. They said that they didn't know if that would enable the 3D map view, but they doubted it because my car is likely to be too old to have supported hardware. Now, I'm not going to spend £200 for an Audi technician to feed a disk in my CD player and wait for two hours if it doesn't actually provide any more functionality so ... How can I find out what firmware updates could be applied to my car, and what functionality I could enable? Dww
craigyb
Your car can be upgraded to firmware 5570 which is the latest, you will have 2120 at the moment for the TMC fix. 3460 is the 3D view level. It is advisable to go to at least 5150 which most cars are currently at.
dww
Sounds like good news! Are there other 05 (or earlier) D3 A8s in which the 3D nav view has been successfully switched on? The dealership suggested that the graphics card in the MMI for my car would probably not be capable of displaying it correctly, but I thought he probably didn't really know ... Second question, is there a specialist who can do the firmware update, or do I really have to take it to a dealership? Dww
craigyb
Most good retrofitters ( and I include myself in this) can perform an update for a nominal fee. Any A8 from 2003 can be upgraded, the hardware is the same. I think they may be getting 3D confused with the new 3G MMI which is a whole new ball game. dww
I'd bring the car to you in an instant, but I seem to remember that you're based quite a long way from Southampton (??Manchester??) I'm keen to get the firmware updated - is there anybody local who could do it? If not, do you fancy a trip to the sunny south!!! D PS That was a joke, by the way. It isn't sunny at all. dww
Sadly, I'm working tomorrow or I'd have given the car a run. It could do with a decent trip. D

gizze
Craig, what happens if some of the modules won't update, like the changer etc. Does it just not update any of them?? Just not update the changer?? Do they disappear from the menu?? Can you still use the car?? I have the 5150 here but for the first time ever I'm really worried about using it. If it fails do I need vag com etc.??
gizze
I got impatient and thought I would pop the disc in and try it out. I was on an early 1140 firmware. It all seemed to go pretty well, although took a good 25-30 minutes to update. The update on the hanyvorb2 did give me an error and reported that it was using firmware 999 instead of the firmware 0990 that it tried to load. When I rebooted the MMI all looked good, 3D Perspective view was available. However, the bluetooth module could not be seen. Bugger!! I put the disc in again and it could see the module thank god, and it said it still needed updating, thought I would quickly do it. Quickly!! I took an hour to load the next lot of software, I felt a right numpty sitting outside mine with the engine running, everyone at the restaurant looking at me sitting there for over an hour and a half doing nothing. But this time it found it and it was updated. Pleased it is done but next time I will do it with some else there with vag com.
putz
What part number discs did you order from your dealer? And what S/W version did you end up with in the MMI> Thanks!
gizze
I just downloaded it. Audi A6 A8 Q7 MMI Update 5150 by John zip Torrent - btjunkie Burnt it to disc and put it in the changer. Hold down car and then hold down return at the same time and you get options to load the new software.
putz
Ahh OK cool. I have always been worried about downloading torrents in fear of making the MMI not work anymore! Downloading as we speak though, I will give it a shot. You had to put the CD in twice for it all to work correctly?
gizze
Yeah, it updated the head unit, the MMI, the cd changer and the tuner and half upgraded the bluetooth. I then had to start again to finish the bluetooth off, this took an hour and a half.
craigyb
Check "CAR" & "SYSTEMS" to see what you are missing, chances are you have lost the battery meter and the instrument cluster.
gizze
Yeah battery meter has gone, so I presume the cluster has too.
dww
I've been put off doing this myself for exactly these reasons. I don't have the right VAG COM interface for my new car and it sounds like it is very advisable to record adaptations before doing the update, and to scan the car afterwards. I'd also be worried that a disk I'd written myself might be unreadable in the wrong places, and so would get part-way through and leave me with a non-working system. I've haven't managed to burn a DVD that the nav system can read, for example, so I worry about burning CDs too. gizze
I never get this with burning discs, I have never burnt a disc that has not been readable. I always burn as maximum speed too.
928gts
Does anyone know if it is "safe" to download the 5150 to my car? I have a '03 A8 4.2, not sure what version I have now, but I'm afraid to do anything irreversible. What can go wrong, and what can be done to avoid it? I am planning to install/get graphical MMI and later a rear view camera, so as far as I understand I have to do a software update anyway, if I then get 3d navi that would be a bonus as well. I don't mind if I loose the battery monitor, but what is the cluster "thing" you are talking about? (And I guess the battery monitor is still functioning, even though I don't see it in the MMI?) craigyb
I think you will struggle unless your existing MMI is at 0700 or above. It has to be done in stages to get to 1170 and then you can jump to 5150.

Thanks for your very quick answer craigyb! My MMI says the following: SW: D3-HU 6300 07.7.0 0406 HW: D3-HU 6300D2.0 FC SW: 02254AUFC78K0F46f FC PS: 0010 FC HW: H41 I have to admit I don't know what this means, I'm a newbie trying to learn without making too many mistakes. craigyb
It means you have 0770, so an upgrade to 5150 should be possible in one jump.

928gts
I've downloaded the file and I'm ready to go Should I scan the system with VAG-COM, or is it just to start the fun/madness without hesitating any further? Is it correct that all this (MMI 5150) is on one CD? Read on another forum that someone had bought 3 discs, but this was MMI 5140. It's easy to get confused by all this, does anyone know of a thread or page with info on the different versions and "how to" do all of this. 928gts
UPDATE: Took the plunge, took about 40 mins and all is ok. The 3d nav is now working Will have to fix the cluster and battery indicator, the next is to get graphical MMI, I'll ask about that in another post if I don't find any answers in the forum. Thanks for you help Craig. Christian
