Mac
Since I was a young un I've always had a problem with a dislocating patella. Essentially what would happen is that my knee cap would slip out of alignment, I'd lose all the strenght in my leg resulting me in falling over & shouting a lot. As soon I'd fallen it would go back into alignment and would just then hurt like a bastard for a while. Obviously, as I've got older it's got worse. I now won't run or do any impact sports. I've had a couple of ops to try and lessen the issue, and they've worked to some extent - I've slipped before and where previously I've known it would have gone now it doesn't. That's not to say it never does, it's just harder to do and hurts. Anyways, my daughter has been complaining about knee problems. As a parent it's very easy to pick up your worries and put them on your child, so I've been trying to avoid that. She describes it as her knee 'clicking'. Anyways, today I had the displeasure of watching her do it, and I'm now convinced it's the same thing I have The angle of the leg, the same fall to the oppossing side, the same push her leg out straight squeezing her knee, and then screaming like a bastard. It's heart wrenching. You can cope with things when they happen to you, just not to when they happen to people you love. I need to do something about it. She's been to her docs a couple of times (with her mom) who have, in my opinion, dismissed it as 'growing pains' - the last time they suggested some light physio - and I mean really light. Knee Cap Dislocation -- Patella, Patellar, Subluxations, Dislocating -- JointHealing.com This seems to explain it better than I can - subluxation. Anyway, I was looking for some advice on how I tackle this with the medic. I have medical insurance that covers me & my daughter but it's by referral. I want to go to the GP with the right information. It's occured to me that it may help me getting hold of my own medical records and going to her GP armed with this information. With me they did some keyholw stuff that released some pressure on the tendons on one side of the knee. I'm waffling a bit, I guess cos I'm upset having seen my daughter hurt herself. I need to do something about it, rather than just letting it rot on like I did with me. Like I say, you can deal with things yourself when they're happening to you. Any advice from you medic types would be much appreciated. I'm off for a glass of wine and a lie down
Mac
Sorry, some more on this now I've calmed down a bit. I wear inserts in my shoes that correct my naturally flat feet. Essentially they raise my arches keep my leg in direct alignment. They've been fantastic at reducing the number of incidents or problems I have with my knees. Essentially without them my posture isn't straight. Anyways, I've been looking at some of my daughter's shoes. Today she was wearing ug boots and it's pretty obvious that her feet are falling in on the in-soles. Looking around the inserts that I use I can't find any in kids sizes. Now I know this won't solve the issue but I'm guessing it will help? Any idea where I could get some from?
DHA
Can I suggest you goto a podiatrist first? Will know more about feet and posture than GPs ever will. Might be a better bet. Oh and ugg boots look like the ruin anyones posture, well certianly the 18 year old girls who are carbon copies of each other who seem to roam London in packs. (not that I am saying your daughter is a member of such an organisation)
Waylander
Mac which part of London are you in. I have very good friends who [respectively] an MSK radiologist and an Orthopod. I will ask who is the best person to refer to privately, if you wish?
Mac
Mate, that would be fantastic GP just referred her for physio and didn't even bother reading my notes. East Central London! Our 'local' hospital I guess would be Whitechapel.
Waylander
I am presuming you would not have any problem travelling to see a preferred specialist? I will ask the boys and get back to you.
