Afternoon all, Fault................Steering lock information on dashboard saying " steering column lock ! visit workshop " Remedy........... Visit VW dealer, give them £82 pounds to plug into system only to be told, it could be either?, the ignition switch £200 or the steering column, complete at £2500 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Had this car from new and no problems until now, wife drives it. I am a skilled vehicle mech, but a bit points and condensor when it comes to these new keyfob insert thinggies. ACFraser1 Posted May 29, 2009 Report Share Posted May 29, 2009 I've had similar problems. I have a VW 2litre 140 bhp 2006 new passat. I had the diagnosis done twice, once by VW and once by an independent garage. Diagnosis was faulty steering column lock, but to fix this it required a new steering column and a new convenience control unit. Cost £745 inc vat. Worked on loads of motors in my years but never come across a steering lock problem in such a low mileage car, not to old a vehicle. Thanks again. To me a steering lock issue must either be a design defect or a manufacturing defect. Greasymech Posted July 22, 2009 Author Report Share Posted July 22, 2009 Remedy to this problem was to replace battery ! Have had no problems since this. StephenGoodRepair Posted October 21, 2009 Report Share Posted October 21, 2009 Hi guys, you are lucky to have a cheap solution. Did your dealers not read the failure codes out of the diagnostics ? Normally they can print a book of 30 pages and should find the reason of the bug in this booklet. I have been having the same steering column fault error with my Passat 05 1.9 SE TDi and the VW dealer garage did not mention anything about the battery, all they suggest is a replacement of the steering column at a huge cost (£900!); bettey voltage checked out fine. snutz Posted September 30, 2010 Report Share Posted September 30, 2010 I just registered to say the same thing happened to our 2006 Passat. The intermittent no start thing started happening so we tried all the temporary fixes (waiting for the light to change color, moving the wheel, etc.) until the whole thing died. We took it to our local dealer here in Salt Lake, described the problem, told them we knew that this was a well documented issue, and that we had already talked with VWofA. They kindly fixed the problem even though the car was just out of warranty. I wanted to let people know that it looks like in at least some cases VW is making this right. aimermoi Posted October 11, 2010 Report Share Posted October 11, 2010 My 06 passat has the same problem. Diagnosis from the dealer required three repair: 1. Steering Column 2. Convenience/Comfort Control Module 3. Battery. Since I read about this problem with many Passat owners, I contact VWofA and explain to them the issue. They agree to pay for the repair of the Steering Column but not the Convenience Control Module. I hope the changing the battery will take care of the issue. I will try soon.
