loz54
On the verge of ordering a new Sportback S3, have an 07 3dr S3 at the moment which is manual. Need a couple of extra doors due to a baby on the way. Can't make up my mind whether to go for manual again or try the S-tronic. Any comments/reviews would be welcome. Merlot
This topic always polarises opinion - look at the tt forum - and its best to drive a DSG/S-Tronic car to see what you feel. I have an S3 Sportback on order with a manual box. That's the right choice for me as I like to change gears myself in a sporty car and like the fact that I miss out three gears most of the time on a fast manual car wheres the S-Tronic in manual mode cannot do this. Try one and decide.
Cuprabob
Agree with above, DSG/S-Tronic is like marmite. You need to take one for a long drive and decide for yourself. One thing to note is that you do need to change your driving style to get the best out of DSG/S-Tronic and to live with the odd quirk.
loz54
Cheers for your comments guys, will check out the TT thread. Took a S3 Sportback with S-tronic out on Saturday, was really impressed, fast changes, super smooth, very easy.......... almost too easy tho. Worried that it will turn me in to an old fart and i'll just leave it in full auto all the time, which would be bad. If i'm just going to cheese around in auto whats the point in buying an S3, I may as well get a di.......d.......diesel (can hardly bring myself to say it!!!) Are there any differences between 'D' & 'S' on the gearbox apart from it holding on to gears for longer? Does it cut out auto changes fully and rely soley on the paddles? Found it a bit annoying that it reverted back to auto after a few seconds when changing with the paddles in 'D'.
Rallye61
Guys. I am trying an S3 multiT out this weekend. I have driven the GTI multi and manual and if that is anything to go by, the manual was more engaging but I will wait and see. One question to all of you who drive S3's - is the S3 in a different league to the GTI as regards comfort, driving experience etc? I will have to decide what to do soon - order an S3, go slightly bit cheaper for a GTI or wait for the R20. any thoughts welcome please

If you are in "D" mode and override with the paddles if you don't use them again within 20secs it reverts back to auto. Easyily solved though just put the stick into manual and you can use the stick or the paddles to your hearts content without inteference unless you try and overrev or pull away in too high a gear
shao_khan
I've driven both and prefer the manual. My S3 was a manual and I couldnt find any reason to spend the extra on the auto.
Merlot
PS Consider Magnetic Ride as well - have it on my TT and love it.
Jo308
I got the S Tronic on my S3 Sportback as I have to do quite a bit of town driving and it makes traffic jams much less stressful. And on the open road, just switch across to manual and use the paddles. It is really good. The mag ride is a real performance boost as well, especially on good country roads.
