Wadders67
So....it seems PS3's are experiencing reliability issues and the old "Yellow light of death" is occurring more and more frequently...so....does this mean the "PS3 is a superior console because XBox gets red ring of death" argument will go away? Frankly, I hope so..I am really tired of pretty much every game review degenerating into a console war. Just a thought and I am now gong to do some carpentry or something, cos I ain't that sad....no...really. :-p
Revert147
Being an Xbox 360 man and having suffered from the original 'red ring of death', I can sympathise with you. having just watched Watchdog's story on the 'yellow light of death' it seems as simple as Sony. Having sub-standard components installed in their machines. Even the weak illness name of the 'yellow light of death' suggests this. I am surprised that unlike Microsoft they are not fixing this problem on existing consoles. My 360 was repaired 3 years after it was bought with no issues and only took a couple of weeks. If a few guys inthe back of a van can fix this problem with an oven, I reckon Sony should start opeining some kitchens!
Tipex
To be honest, Watchdog's report was the first time I've ever heard of this. I missed the first part of the report though, does it affect all models of PS3 or just certain ones? mines an original launch console and has so far been 100% reliable. I keep wondering if I should sell it and get a new slim one, as it'd be much easier to fit in the rack, and where it is, if the cabinet door is shut after a while it sounds like it's going to take off the fan works so hard! CarMad
It sounds to me just like a HD failure, if so they can all suffer from that. I've upgraded mine and I can't say I've spoken to anyone who has had a PS3 problem. So back to the console wars about the dodgy XBOXes...
Riz
I`m got a launch console and mines been faultless.... and its gets some serious use too. Not so much for games but other things like freeview, movies and music....... its had some really long periods of use too... sometimes on non-stop for 12 hours plus....... Very reliable bit of kit. If it is a HDD failure then theres nothing that can be done by that, they can fail at anytime.... get a bigger one for £60ish. You will have lost all your saved data if you didnt back it up but the PlayStation3 will reload its OS etc..... get back online, download all the updates and then your back up and running..... You can always buy a external USB HDD for backups and saving larger content. I record quite a bit of freeview content and just put it onto the 1TB USB drive. Mac
I hang around a fair number of PS3 forums and while you do get the odd failed unit - typically the hard disk - there's hardly a big uproar on mass failures  To be fair I never had a single problem with my Xbox either. Dave
I don't have a PS3 yet.. not felt the need to get one, but i had the 3 rings of death on my x-box after just short of 3 years of ownership, and they sent me a new one! Superb customer service.. means I'm a loyal and happy customer.. and I don't reckon you can beat x-box live.. it's just so easy!
