Tyre choice for my new alloys

Hi All,

I took the plunge and scooped up a set of refurbed 7 twin spoke RS4 alloys off ebay at what I considered to be a very reasonable price. They are 19" rims on 8.5J width

I assumed they will fit my D3 with no modifications, but my questions to you all is:

1) Do I need to get spacers or modify anything? Please tell me they will fit and I wont have to relist them!!

2) Whats the best size of tyre. It seems 255/40 R19 is the one Audi fit if that size wheel is sold as an option

3) Any brands spring to mind? I had Toyo Proxes on my old Lexus - these come in at £180 per tyre. Any other thoughts?

cheers

Mark

try these people

D3's come with 8.5 x 19 standard and 9 x 19 and 9 x 20 so any will fit

255-40-19 are standard size too and ive got them on some RS6 9x19's on my A8 d3

275-35-19 will also fit

mlillywh:

1) Wheel Fits: One key factor is the ET value, the offset from the centre line of the wheel assembly. D3 A8s wheels apparently need to be between 35 & 45 to fit properly. [My factory fit 8 x 18 RS4s are stamped ET 43 on the inner surface].

2) The best size is dependent on whether you want "fits" or "fits and keeps the speedo accurate"! As you suggest, Audi selections are probably best but you still need to check wheel width as well as wheel height to do the job properly. [Note; my wheels are 8 [wide] and 18 [high] - Audi do 8.5 x 18s too which have a different size fitted as standard].

A good guide to wheels, tyres and fitting is on the web here:

Car Bibles : The Wheel and Tyre Bible Page 2 of 2

but you need to be clear headed when reading it.

3) I've been using Kuhmo KU31s which have lasted me almost 30000 miles and are about £125 per wheel at the moment. I'll be fitting a new set next month. on my TDI 3.0.

Regards - Julian

dont quote me on this but i thought RS4 7 spokes were 9x19 not 8.5

whats the audi part number on the back of the wheel and whats the ET

RS6 wheels fit my D3 fine (9x19) they do stick out more and so fill the arches better

even though ive just changed to 20's

255-40-19 tyres are the correct size for the D3

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm currently looking at various sets of 20" alloys at the moment. They come in all sorts of offsets from ET35 up to ET46 (which i believe is the correct A8 offset).

Does anybody know what will happen if ET35 or ET40 offset wheels are fitted? Would they simply not fit properly and rub on the suspension or would they ruin the handling etc?

I understand what the offset is and how it is measured, but I'm curious to know what effect it will have before i buy any.

So I got everything put together and fitted today - no rubbing and looks fantastic :-)

My thanks to Julian Hicks for the link to the car bible - i went through the maths and came to the conclusion that the ET wasn't quite as important if you weren't fitting max width tyres (essentially a 275 profile might rub with an ET of 48, but a 255 is 20mm slimmer)

I'll post a couple of pictures and let you know how she drives during the week

Happy days :-)

cheers

I've recently picked up a set of 20" rims for my A8. Turning the wheels over i see that they are stamped as 8J width. This sounds a little narrow, but they certainly look wide enough by eye. They are also stamped as ET45 so hopefully this will be ok.

Now i was told they need 245/35/20 tyres, but using the tyre calculator (Car Bibles : The Wheel and Tyre Bible Page 2 of 2) it seems that this will cause my speedo to read a little fast (I currently have 255/45/18 tyres).

Swapping for 255/35/20 tyres seems to be much more accurate on the speedo. Are 255 width tyres ok to put on 8J rims? I just want to check before i go ahead and buy the tyres.
