softwareman
Can anyone Help - I have a S4 Cabrio - 2004 reg, I was driving at less than 20 miles an hour when it made a bad noise from the engine, and stalled. I started it up again and it sounded terrible. I did not start it again but had it recovered to my local Audi garage - Swansea Audi. They looked at it, poked about it, and said they didnt have a clue what was wrong with it but it sounded like a serious timing issue, and they want £2000 to take the engine out, just to have a look see what it wrong. The engine has only done 35,000 miles, out of warranty. Has anybody else had experiences like mine. Am i wrong for expecting an engine to last more than 35,000 miles, especially a chain driven one. I cant afford to pay the potential £6000 bill - HELP.
Mook
Welcome to Tyresmoke I had a rattle on my S4 (same engine) at 40K miles that bugged the hell out of me and they ended up replacing the chain and all the tensioners. Car was under warranty, but I saw the bill that was sent to them and your £6K is about right. The standard time to take an engine out of an S4 is 8 hours, so £2K is too steep I would say, but that's down to your negotiation with the garage in question. Scotty
At the mileage Audi should be offering up some good will. Mine was a 2003 S4 with similar mileage and with my issue they offered 40% with the dealer adding 10%. Good luck
softwareman
Audi at the moment are offering no good will - any idea who to contact at Audi to get a good result? Thanks for your messages guys.
Scotty
Ask your dealer to approach them on the basis that it's such low mileage you wouldn't expect an Audi to have such a major failure. Have you got a full Audi service history? If not you're likely to be on your own. Edited October 14, 2009 by Scotty
softwareman
Yes full Audi history - have put a complaint into Audi UK, after dealer approached them and they said no Goodwill / Contribution available
Scotty
So what have you done to upset them?!?! They offered me their contribution and I said they should pay it all as it turned out to be a pre-existing condition from within the warranty period. They said "since you don't have a full Audi service history we think we're already being generous". Once I pointed out there records were incorrect (dealer had to push up the data on their computer system) I went back and said "since it has a full history now what?" and they said "that's your lot" (a bit of paraphrasing going on). They even sent a formal email stating it was the final offer. They tried to stiff me for 1/2 the cost but it seems they're really gunning for you. I managed to PX my car at full value against at new one. It's the only way I could get out of it. If it ends up that you're on your own then don't let Audi do it. I don't know where you're based but use someone like APS ( APS Homepage ) to do the work as it will be a lot cheaper and be done well. Good luck dude. Let us know how you get on. softwareman
I have had Audi say that they will pay 33% of final bill, is it best to stay with a main dealer, and get the 33% off audi, or to go to an independent garage who will be loads cheaper - any ideas guys ? Dave
I would go with audi with the 33% off.. you should end up with a fully working, approved car. If it goes wrong then at least you have somewhere to go!. If you can afford it, maybe get it repaired and then Px it.
Mook
Get it done by the Audi dealer.

Depending on the length of time you've been a customer of the dealer, I'd also ask them from a contribution? They can only say no.
