hello all,

i am not technical, so dumb it down for me :) , thanks

Just want to thank you in advance for your help.

I have a VW Golf GT TDI (115bhp), 2001 plate (mrk 4)

For a while now i have experienced a loss of power. It has not got the same bite as it use to have. I drove my mates car (same model but a 2000 plate) and the power difference, between his and mine, is next level...my car would struggle to beat any car at any lights.

On motorways it is really bad...whenever i hit a hill the car will struggle to get to 50/55mph. Even the simple every day hills it struggles.

can some one help.....

Hi Gups!

The most likely culprit is the MAF. It's tells the engine the amount of air coming in. However, if it's duff, then it sometimes sends the car into limp mode where the turbo doesn't come on song. So, change that and you should see a difference.

MAFs for the 115 PD are about £60 on exchange for a proper Bosch unit. Accept no other make! (very important)

Go to your local GSF or VAG parts place and they'll get one for you. Will take about 5 - 10 mins max to change. It sits near the air filter in the engine bay. It makes part of the air pipe - so remove the big engien cover by tugging it up, unscrew the MAF housing on the air filter box, then with some good pliers, squeeze the jubilee clip thing and slid it over onto the air pipe. Unplug MAF, slid it off and replace.

Make sure you do not let the jubilee clip thing loose, as you'll NEVER get it back on!

I replaced mine and my turbo stays on song now.

Other things - maybe a split boost pipe, but you'd still get turbo boost for a while until it registers something wrong.

Other than that, is the car running OK?

Hope that sorts it!

I'd say 90% it's the MAF, very common problem.

It's not your turbo, don't panic. They're bulletproof. I sold my golf with 175k on the clock on the original turbo, chipped for 75k. I know the bloke I sold it to and it's still running sweet. If the turbo goes - oil everywhere, now power, smokey as hell!
