smudge07
Hi all have been look at A8s and have got some advice already from the forum. I have another question having just been looking at the audi used car website. They have the SE models marked up as mulitronic and the sport models as tiptronic? Anyone know the difference? is it flappy paddle gear change or does the tiptronic have up and down gate on the gear selector that the multitronic doesn't have? or are they totally different gear boxes. I also wondered is the gear change as good dsg audis i.e you can't tell when the gear has changed? Thanks a lot+++
PsYcHe
If I remember rightly, the multitronic will only be on the 3.0 engines. It's the front-wheel drive gearbox whereas the tiptronic ones are on the quattro cars usually. Though I could be wrong.. It has happened
smudge07
Thanks for that should have said they are all 3.0tdi quattro's.
TrundleFly
AFAIK multitronic is the CVT gearbox and tiptronic is the normal one. Multitronic is only for 2 wheel drive vehicles and as all A8s are quattro this would mean they are all tiptronic. They may just be labelled wrong? I think the flappy paddle thing depends on what stearing wheel you go for, as it is a feature of the sports steering wheel. I can tell you that I have a 3.0 TDI SE and it has flappy paddles and an up/down shift option on the gearbox. I therefore think they are all tiptronic and the rest depends what options you have on there. For example, on the options list of mine it has: Sports 3-spoke tiptronic multi-function steering wheel. I think the standard SE steering wheel is 4 spoke and maybe doesn't have the paddles. Could be wrong though. To be honest, I've never used them. I had the paddles in my previous M3 and they made sense there as it was a sports car. I could also see the point if I had a more powerful A8 or maybe an S8 but I bought mine as a cruiser so have never found any use for them. Just leaving the gearchanges to the auto box has been fine. I had a test drive in a A6 multitronic and I couldn't feel the gear changes. In my tiptronic A8 I can, but they are very smooth.
TrundleFly
Should also add that the A6 multitronic also had paddles. I think it is all down to the steering wheel you get... Also a friend has an A5 multitronic with paddles'
PsYcHe
Be warned.. Not all A8s are quattro! All V8 A8s (and up) are, but many V6s aren't. Theyr'e the ones with mtltitronic.
smudge07
Thanks a lot for that trundlefly just the info I needed - audi don't have their cars labeled correctly - not very reassuring!! and they are all quattros!! Small matter of find all the cash now!! the one I am considering is : 3.0tdi quattro se with comfort seats, bose, boot thing, sports wheel. It is June 08 with 35,000 just been serviced for the second time £25,000 it has 17 inch wheels that aren't great but might try and haggle a change:ffs: link
TrundleFly
PsYcHe - all D3 A8s are quattro aren't they, or have I got that completely wrong? I just assumed we were talking about D3s for some reason.
TrundleFly
Smudge - sounds like a nice car. Adaptive cruise control was a must for me. I tried it in a test car and then just had to have it, but quite hard to find. Just something you may want to add to your list if you do lots of m/way driving.. I just assumed we were talking about D3s for some reason. The only D3s NOT quattros were/are the 3.0 petrol and the 2.8 FSi. They are FWD and Multronic (CVT) NOT Tip. PsYcHe
What he said Adaptive cruise is awesome, got it in mine. Plus you get a better display in centre of the dashboard.

smudge07
Thanks for the replies - I live in Scotland and will spend a lot of time on B roads going over to the West coast so I think I can live with adaptive cruise control - sounds good for the motorways. I called Audi today about the car in the link with the possibility of bigger wheels they are going to get back to me tomorrow. Got another question do the rear seats fold down - guess who asked me that question
PsYcHe
Rear seats don't fold down in A8s Adaptive cruise is a PITA on windy roads as it keeps picking up the scenery and cars coming the opposite direction (and will slam on the brakes in a corner.. fun). TrundleFly
I've never tried the adaptive cruise on windy roads, sounded too risky. It can't read corners so I could see myself flying into a corner too fast with that on. I wonder if the new A8 with the new mapping stuff will be able to slow down for corners. Strictly motorways for me. Even then it does do the odd bit of random breaking but I can live with that.
