Milo
Bloody hell!I'm lucky to have private insurance through work, which is why I got seen within a week, then had the SA decompression a month later. It took a good six months of work to get it back to normal and I still can't lift as much as I could 18 months ago without feeling it in that shoulder, but it's a shed load better than it was. Interesting comment about the age thing - the consultant I saw said although the likelihood is more as you get older, something like this isn't age dependent. Best of luck sorting it I'm a month away from my op now (SA decompression plus AC joint excision i.e. chop a bit off my collar bone plus all the associated bits) and a bit aprehensive. I cannot keep on like this as I've lost all strength in my shoulder plus have been munching codeine for a while now which has been interesting at times. Could have had it done this week but I've got a jolly booked for June 11th hence I'm booked for the end of the month. Not looking forward to the rehab nor the months off work to be honest but have got no choice according to the consultant. Hey ho. How's yours Simon, still feeling a twinge? Mook? Fighting fit? scooby_simon
I'd guess I am back to about 90% movement and 60% strength. Planning to sail for the first time Sunday or Monday; not ready for full-on racing! Do not notice it in general use anymore and do not need to protect it. Still not confident enough to return to full-on sillyness yet. Might start doing Ski aeriels late summer; and around the same for "any wind sailing". Might try and get into an FIS race over the winter!
Scotty
Had mine checked yesterday after my motorbike crash. "There's bone chips in your shoulder but they're nothing to worry about"
Milo
Well the real fun starts now. Had my op today so currently have a completely numb arm and shoulder which I cannot move but the pain is in the post. It seems to have been a success and my collar bone is now 10mm shorter than it was and all the other damage has been repaired and cleaned up. Just in time to sit back, enjoy 2 months sick leave and watch England's march to the world cup final.....

Milo
Right handed but left shoulder Already got my exercises planned for this week and they've started already. The internet can be a dangerous place and I've read too many stories of post op nightmares so I intend to do everything by the book to give myself a fighting chance. Mook
Swift recovery Milo Scary - my right shoulder op is this Thursday. Spent a long weekend in Snowdonia this weekend just gone doing 31 peaks and some mountaineering before going in for the op this week - last chance to get something like that done this year in some decent weather. Not sure about needing a month off though - I'm off for just over a week, which is what I did when I had the same op on my left shoulder last year. Hardest thing will be driving again. I'll dig out some of the best post-op exercises I did to return full strength to my shoulder after three months of being pissed around by the physio last time. These came from one of the personal trainers at the gym who specialises in shoulder work. I've asked the consultant to not go straight through the anterior deltiod this time, as this is what I had the most trouble with last time. I'm not bothered if it means a permanent scar this time (the keyhole scars from the left shoulder are almost invisible). See you on the other side :D Edited June 29, 2010 by Mook
Milo
Cheers, I've pretty much binned the advice of hospital yesterday as I would have still been in bed with my arm in the sling. The consultant originally directed me to the shoulderdoc.co.uk website as being a good source of info for the operation and the recovery. With that in mind and remembering what he said to me in March, I've been doing my exercises regularly today and the sling has been off. May have done too much but I'd rather risk over cooking things early on and getting a bit of additional discomfort versus doing nothing and letting it seize up and give big problems in the future. I've also had a AC joint excision so they've removed the entire joint rather than just cleaning it up as the joint was arthritic. With my job I need to be able drive and may also have to do a lot of climbing depending on where I am, neither of which I'm doing until I think it's right. I've never been off on the sick before so I don't feel guilty about taking a couple of months to make sure I know I'm right before I go back Edited June 29, 2010 by Milo
Mook
I don't think you should be overdoing it, Milo - you risk tearing the tendons which will weaken them long term and they'll take longer to recover. I completely get doing exercises, but take it easy! I'm having the excision as well and seeing the x-rays from last time, it's like a different person's shoulder! shao_khan
I posted up about a shoulder injury in here I think last summer and I am just about recovered 12 months on - I still get some twinges and discomfort, but its taken a lot of work and following advice to the letter. Didnt like the MRI much - mainly because I had to breath in to get in the tube Regular excercise pattern has definately helped it though, initial physio was pants and I ended up with the condition worsening, but second seems to have got it right
Milo
I wanted to get some dumbells to help with the rehab on my shoulder and thought I'd have a search for any local ones for sale on ebay. Milo
Left shoulder.......fixed :D Right shoulder......cortisone 1 - 0 pain 'Been to see about my right one today; one examination and x-ray later, I've got arthritis in that one too (not from the x-ray) As it's not too bad at the moment, I've decided to go down the road of a couple of cortisone injections to postpone the inevitable. Lesson for today - too much sport in your younger years adds up to a bag of pain in your older years. Don't do it kids, stick to your Sony Gameboy things and eat burgers. Mook
LOL I'm off back a week Monday to see the consultant to get my next fix of Cortisone 6 weeks after the last. It's supposed to last 6 months!

Tipex
Sadly it doesn't work like that, my life of always doing the minimum amount of physical exertion possible has also left me creaking and groaning every morning, and my backs been fecking agony all week. Tipex
I've lost just over a stone, 1st 2lb to be exact, since mid Jan by simply changing my eating habits, and still not doing any exercise. I realise that rate of loss will back right off though so I'm going to start going swimming thrice a week at the end of Feb too, so hopefully I'll be considerably less fat next time you set your beady eyes upon me! Anyone know of any specific exercises to strengthen the lower back? Fecker gives me some gip every six months it so.
Mook
The most important thing for your lower back isn't to strengthen your lower back (although that helps) - it's your core (a.k.a your abs). You could start with some sit-ups, crunches, planks and leg-raises (do a Google for them if you're not sure). What this is doing is strengthening your stomach muscles to support your back. It's not instant and it's not overnight and don't do too much to start with.

Milo
'Been to see about my right one today; one examination and x-ray later, I've got arthritis in that one too (not from the x-ray) As it's not too bad at the moment, I've decided to go down the road of a couple of cortisone injections to postpone the inevitable. I am officially feeling sorry for myself today. 2 bloody painful sessions at the physio in the last 10 days and my shoulder and back are currently held together with medical gaffer tape, literally. The rate of deterioration has been quite spectacular over the last 8 months and the physio confirmed I am simply putting off the inevitable. Scans reveal I am doing soft tissue damage now and and the pain in the AC joint is back with a vengeance despite only having had the last cortisone injection in July. Back to see the consultant in 2 weeks and I think I know what he'll say, surgery ASAP Can't exercise, can't ride my bike, driving is painful, in fact almost everything is painful. I've had so much ibuprofen I've got a bad stomach now so I've had to stop those. Pissed off. [/self pity]
