Instrument Cluster Failed

Polo 1.4 CL 2000

My instrument cluster has stopped working. I took it out and checked it over, it still all looks new, the multi pin plug was spotless to. Pluged it back in and it lasted for about five minutes and then just left a few diggits in the clock and milege windows.

I read that this was a common fault on these in the cold weather, (which it when it started).

Does any one have an idea as to what part fails on the board, and how to remove the circuit board from it's face as it seams the needles need to be pulled off. which I am not sure is right.

As I can see the back of the board but not the other side where all the components are.

Thanks Ken

Do you mean the DIS or the whole instrument panel has failed ? People have succesfully swapped both the instruments & the DIS cluster over. If you look at TDIclub or google MkIV instrument cluster swap you will get an idea what is involved.

I have never done it but the nearer you stay to the original parts the easier it will be as immobilisers changed generations & some wires moved about so it all depends how bigger a project your looking for...

You will need VCDS + Vagtacho to make the swap, you car should be old enough that these tools will allow you to set the mileage, keys etc. to work properly - getting the immo working is important too - I only know Golfs so can't help much more !

Ben (Shark90) on here has done a lot of cluster swaps so if you are near him & want a working car without the learning curve I would try him.
