Golfer
Hi guys, I get to test most of the new cars coming out, this weekend it was the turn of the 5 ltr XJ jag, and the 3.0 Oiler. The cars feel heavy on the road, I tried to put my finger on why and concluded it was the steering feel and seating position these are "long Cars" even the short wheel base is long 5122mm. The ride quality is still IMO "old Man" and thats both Oiler and 5 ltr in any mode. Interoir fit and finish is first class if anything "Bling Bling" just too many gimmicks,to many silly lights and changing dials, leather quality beautiful though. Sat-Nav "Dangerous", it's touch screen and you have to look at it to make changes and the screen position does not help improve ease of use. Sitting in the back seats is awful, short people will see very little as the combined high doors and sloping glass greatly reduce vision, this coupled with a dark interior was very claustrophobic, it is better with the sun-roofs open and lighter leather though, kids will see very little. The drive; well Jaguar as you know is renowned for ride-quality and does a fantastic "Old Man" job on any road surface, whoever changing from normal to sport mode makes little difference to ride and frankly I would just leave it in sport for the "Red Dials". Performance; 5 ltr poor response poor gear changes, gutless and too smooth, again "Old Man". Performance 3.0 Oiler; Low down torque say first 2.5K Rpm good there after drops like a stone and is nothing but a cruiser, the car as I said feels heavy in spite of all the hype about aluminium construction , the diesel feels "under powered" and any BMW Oiler will eat it alive. Space and leg room: I drove the short wheel base models, front space Minimal everything wraps around the driver making for a ergonomically good space for most things, but tight for such a large car, rear space was good, rear seats were NOT fold down I was told and boot space was 520 Ltrs which seemed ok. Visual appeal: The car in the flesh looks every bit it's 5122mm length, this is accentuated by the sloping rear and dark tinted rear windows, and from a side view looks nice, from the rear however does not. The car feels solidly made and Paint finish and panel fit looked good. To sum up IMO, still not got away from the "Old Man" appeal.
cruiser647
Feck! So the journos love it....... and a real world driver hates it! The journos rate everything about it. The 5 litre and the best one of the bunch the 3.0d. They do look long and I think the looks will take a good while to get used to. Will have to try to get other TSNers to drive them - Gizze? and see what they think. So, they are not on your 'next' list?
theduisbergkid
Not sure I agree with the old man image anymore, I fancy one, and I'm no pensioner. I'd be happy to have something with a ride quality to handle our shitty roads better than much German stuff. OK, they'll never be track-slags, but the latest Jag line up looks more appealing then ever in most other respects.

Cruiser I was disappointed especially with the 5 ltr, it was too "flat and smooth", and in sport mode gear changes NOT good. They can't release the car as it has major software problems, the processors can't talk to each other they said!!!!!!! Why invite drivers to test a product "unfinished"?. theduisbergkid
Software problems aside, am I the only one who sees the irony in the term 'sport mode' in a 2+ ton executive saloon ?
Golfer
Software problems aside, am I the only one who sees the irony in the term 'sport mode' in a 2+ ton executive saloon ?Well the way it was advertised indicated a move towards appealing to the "Younger Drivers", by which a "sport mode" would be a good gimmick along with the Digital interface changing colour to RED when this mode is selected. I expected a definite change in "feel" when selecting this mode, it did not happen for me.This car in basic 3.0 Diesel spec is £55+ The SS Model is £90K + This needs to be better for this kind of money. Servicing is once per year or 12.5K, this is both antiquated and expensive, more fuel to by-pass it.

gizze
I have to say I am liking the Jags more and more. To be honest if I didn't need an estate as the family bus I would seriously consider the 3.0 V6 XF. The fact you can contract hire one for £300 a month doing 15k miles a year is superb value I reckon, especially when it comes with everything you need including Nav. Price up a new 530i to the same spec. and it is £12000 more.
Golfer
Journos love it and ONE real world driver hates it (so far) I don't hate it, I just would not spend £90K on the "S"one that performed ( not tested yet).
garcon magnifique
Realistically the standard 5.0 V8 will sell in very low numbers. Sales will either be the 3.0 Diesel (same engine as the XF Diesel S) or the supercharged V8. Granted the XJ is inevitably bigger and heavier than the XF, but given the figures for that 3.0d engine I would imagine that in terms of performance the XJ would be quicker than an A8 3.0TDI, 730d and S350CDI, but slower than the rocketship that is the 740d. I saw a Jaguar test car in Leamington getting on for 6 months ago - not the best colour (burgundy) but looked imposing, and huge. I can imagine the styling (especially that rear) will have something of a marmite effect - it reminds me a little of the rear of the Citroen C6 (which I like), but I need to see it again. It's a bold car in a traditionally conservative market sector - ask BMW how well that usually works in terms of sales...

No worries - I was referring mainly to Cruiser's comment that real world drivers "hate" them. So actually, one real-world driver doesn't like it much

Garson with respect too the comparison with the Xf 3.0D or Xj 3.0D, neither will live with the 730D, I have driven it and it can go, BUT it's one ugle fecker. You really must drive one (Xj3.0D) 6.0 ecs, in there dreams. The 5ltr might make 6 secs if it's down hill.

I agree, I think with that sort of car you would be better to buy the 3.0 for £50k and put the other £40k to something that is 'proper' fun. Golfer
I am sure I read somewhere that the ally built XJ is lighter than the XF........ In R form anyway. The lightness was being touted when I was going out in it, it just did not "feel" light at all, the way it steers and drives gives the impression of heavy and planted, you know "Old Man.If these cars are quick then they hide it very well, you all must have a drive. I still feel ostentatious is my verdict, very over the top with gadgets that they can't get to work. The sat-nav has to be looked at hard to see the functions on it, well you try that at 80 MPH. Merlot
Did you bother getting winter tyres for the M3 John? If I still have my Maser 4200GT by October (probably a tall order) then I will be getting a set.
Golfer
Did you bother getting winter tyres for the M3 John?If I still have my Maser 4200GT by October (probably a tall order) then I will be getting a set. Well I told you about the 18" EOM wheels ( Anthracite) I fitted, they had new fronts and 5.5/6mm rears, I took the rears off (which I am selling) and bought new 265/40/18 PS2's to match the fronts, I have driven them in this poor weather and TBH they are fine if you drive with care. I toyed with spending on a full set of winters as just a pair would be useless and decided against. However if all four were due I would have gone for winters. PS) Going to get my 19" double spokes fitted tomorrow @ Listers which have PS2's the last set they could find they say, don't know why michelin are not producing enough of these.
