Navigation RNS-E updated but has problem

Recommended Posts

Can I perhaps ask a question here....

My mate asked me to get a copy of RNS-E 2010 for his sat nav in the Audi, I got hold of a copy, put the dvd in and it did a software update no problem, BUT when it tried to read the disc after the upgrade it just said dvd/cd unreadable in red writing.

Tried his original disc in but it now asks for the updated disc which it will not read.

Is there a way to downgrade the syatem back to the original setup so the old disc will work..

Thmx

Yes you can just follow these steps

remove the DVD

- connect with VAG-COM to #37

- set channel 97 to 1 and save the value

- exit VAG-COM

- insert the old DVD that contains the software you want to downgrade to

- wait until the RNS-E finishes the update (starts a few seconds after inserting the DVD, will reboot twice and then power off)

- connect with VAG-COM to #37 channel 97 and save the value of 0

Is there a way to downgrade the syatem back to the original setup so the old disc will work..

RNS-E backup DVD's are difficult to burn due to copy protection, the update discs are easy and that is basically what you have made but the RNS-E knows that it's a copy so won't read the maps. Strangely MMI backup DVD's are easy to burn.

Is there any special software to use to burn this?

this sounds like a dealer fix, bother, dont understand why ythe disc did a software update but wont go further, is there any special type of dvd to use etc?

No special type of DVD, but you do have to use the right DVD writer and get the settings exactly right (e.g. the DVD type must be DVD-ROM) you can't just burn a copy using any DVD writer.

There's a lot of discussion about the "right" DVD writer on Audi Forum.

Wouldn't bother with the burned dvd disc. I bought the correct DVD burner for a tenner on ebay, worked well for a few months, but then it would come up with the message 'Insert Navigation DVD'. Disc also got VERY hot, so i can't imagine it was doing the laser any good.

Ended up buying a genuine 2009 dvd off ebay for £30.

A copied DVD is more difficult to read and makes the laser work harder and get hotter - which reduces it's life and can lead to you having to replace the DVD drive.

IMHO a copied DVD can easily be a false economy - genuine DVDs can be found on eBay at reasonable prices most of the time.

Can I get some advise as to how to correctly proceed with a later navigation disk. The situation is I have just got a 2004 A3. The DVD is 2008 version Europe Central West 8P0919884AA but has problems as there are many scratches and marks. I have downloaded Audi RNS-E Navigation Plus 2012 Europe (BE) and RNS-E Navigation West Europe 2011 AT images, burned as DVD ROM booktype and tried them in the unit. They show as update DVDS but nothing else is being read.

Do I need to update the software and if so how? I have noticed someone with problems after updating the software so what are the risks?

Is there anyone local to me in Stockport (map suggested 2 members not too far away) that I can get some help from please?
