cruiser647
You can get a Passat R36 estate from £36K......more car, better engine! Why buy the Golf R when you can have a Passat R?
burble
Because maybe you don't want a Passat? I could have bought numerous different cars when I bought my R32 but it was the R32 that I wanted, not anything else.
Woppum
I think its a really solid car actually. Looks great inside and out, but at this price you really have to love it.

I could have bought numerous different cars when I bought my R32 but it was the R32 that I wanted, not anything else. The R32 is different. The 6 cylinder engine and it's sound, colour and look are fantastic. The new R has nothing really. Hence my comment about getting the Passat if you want a lovely 6 cylinder engine. I'd have the Passat over the R Golf everytime - if I was in the market. Although I do register they are different size cars.

SilverChariotR
Interesting to see there's mainly negative comments about the Mk 6 Golf R. I've recently upgraded to one from a Mk 5 Golf R32 and have been very impressed. The exhaust note of the new R is not a patch on the old R32, but it does have character. Much better than the S3, for instance, which has an identical engine. However, in every other area, the Mk 6 Golf R is better. It's a tremendous all-round package if you're okay with those subtle/understated looks. The Mk 6 R seems very senstive to colour. For instance, the old R32 looked good in black, but I think it doesn't suit the new R. The best colours IMHO are Rising Blue with Silver 19" alloys: and Candy White with Black 19" alloys: Tornado Red with 19" Black alloys also appeals: There's a dedicated forum for Golf and Roc R owners (better not promote it here) which is quite active with nearly 200 member and several thousand posts. I think the car is very much of the moment, but is expensive. Just my 2 cents.
Soulboy
I do quite like them myself (although not mad about the standard wheels). Its just the price! But, I have already noticed a few on Auto Trader coming in below £29k now. If I can get a decent deal on a nearly new one later this year, I will probably ended up jumping in. Woppum
Im narrowing down my options for a hatch down now as i learnt my lesson from driving a feckus RS yesterday. The build quality was shocking utter pile of ****, the 7yr old mk4 r32 was leaps ahead. The ford had a list of over 31k which im sure makes the golf at 37-40k seem rather cheap. \my trouble is i am finding all these cars very expensive for what they are. in a dream world id get the scorocco r, but im not paying that money for it. Id stretch to 26k but not a penny more, just dosent feel right. i think ill settle for a barely used gti mk 6, sorrocco 210 or 123d. Do the right deal and everything else looks expensive and unnecessary?

N3WOB
I hope that VW take a bath on this...they've got to get real. I wonder how long before we see them cutting their prices to dealers as they had to with the mark V to move stock....
scillyisles
Whilst we all agree that the pricing is just daft - I don't see them reducing the price anytime soon. I did some fishing at various VW dealers trying to check availability and price flexibility. In essence, the dealers are hardly getting any and as such I could not find any in the system. All cars seem to being built to customer order and even though the price is over the top it would appear that there are enough people prepared to pay over the odds for the top of the range Golf. Rachel
Went and drove something that looked very much like this today (in DSG guise): It's a very different car to the MkIV R32, and is much more S3 like (or at least in the spec we get in Oz) for about $20K less. If I hadn't owned a MkIV R32 I'd definitely be interested in this car, but it just doesn't come close to the "charisma" of the original.

lenny
Humm..... I very rarely visit tyesmoke now... But I have owned a highly modded mk4 R32 and Mk5 R32 with a brief interlude with a fungus ST (load of keek!!) and scirocoo GT (lovely motor but motor but seemed to Play safe!!) between each mk Golf... I loved my Mk4 with a passion and the mk5 was well great but lacked the special touches... This time well.. I priced a Mk6 R and £35k-£40k is just crazy money!! so I looked around and managed to pick up a Porsche cayman s with 2k on the clock for less money and honestly its 1000000000% better than any VW R!!! VW have lost the plot... end off! Long live the Mk4 R32!!!!

If I hadn't owned a MkIV R32 I'd definitely be interested in this car, but it just doesn't come close to the "charisma" of the original. i now have the roccy r and have done a few miles. totally agree with the statement it dosen't have the charisma of the old car. most of this is down to a much looser, more relaxed way of going about its job. take the engine for example, from just under 2k rpm you have so much power than ozzes torque through the rest of the rev range, the mk4 engine you have to work, this you just change up early and get ozzes of torque again. the steering is very light, i find myself driving with one hand most the time which is totally unacceptable as a driver. the sound is the final clincher, it sounds like a hoover, whisper quiet and somewhat diesel like. if this was my one car id be very disappointed, as its a daily which i want to be very different to the rs it is perfect (but could do with a little more character). graeme86
Hate to break it to you guys...but VW UK are having a lend of you. The Golf R is cheaper than the Audi S3 in Australia! ...and doing a direct currency conversion its cheaper again even including our exhorbitant Government taxes and having to ship it all the way over here. BrakeSnake
Soulless. A step backward even though it moves forward in my opinion. I've test driven one and despite the price coming into the equation, I never saw myself driving out of my way just to get a bottle of milk 10 miles away along a route with tunnels and open bends. I'd rather spend 15 k on a newish mk5 R32/ or mk 4 and spend another 10k on tuning and making it mine and unique. Just my opinion though.
