hi. my vw bora 1.9 tdi (p.d engine 130 bhp) has a starting problem.

when i start it from cold it starts and then cuts off. the second time i try to restart it, it takes a long time, but eventually starts. then after a few mins it starts blowing smoke out. the smoke eventually clears up once the car has warmed up, but for the last few days the smoke has been there even once its warmed up.

this happens everytime i start the car from cold.

there is no loss of power and it drives ok.

ive changed the fuel filter, and its still the same. i had the oil changed about 1 month ago. any help appreciated. thnx.

yes, that was my other bora. im glad that is fixed. but this one is my main car, and i have spent well over 2 thousand pound on it.

i cleaned the egr out on this one aswel, but still the same problem.

plz, if u have any inkling, as to what it could be...?

yes, oil level is ok, and it doesnt loose any oil.

ive checked the breather pipes and they are also ok.

ive noticed one thing today....when i start it, and wait for ALL the ignition lights to go off, including the airbag one, then it starts first time, but still blows smoke for about 5 min. ive spent to much cash on this car...almost over £2000, in the last year..

injector (fitted and supplied by vw) cost £860.

oil sump cost (my old one cracked and was leaking oil)

batery and starter motor

new brakes and disk

wishbone

gearbox repair

fuel filter

plus a few other bits which i cant remember. most of the work was done by vw...

not to mention the diagnostic checks...

i understand now, why they call them the stealers.

no it doesnt chug. when i try to start it first time in the morning, it starts and then cuts of almost straight away.

the 2nd time i turn the key to start it again, the engine just turns, and it doesnt fire up, the engine keeps turning, id say for about 5 seconds, and then it slowly starts to fire up, and starts. the smoke is not very heavy, unless i rev the engine, and it disappears after about 10 mins.

then the car starts fine, unless i leave it for 4 or 5 hours.

i dont have a warning light on or anything, and i have no loss in power.

yes, i heard the noise, it was like a zzzpp noise, which lasted for about 2-3 sec.

the last 2 days, it has started first time, rather than previous attempts, where i had the problem of it cutting out and starting the 2nd time.

i hav changed the temperature switch and had a oil and filter change.

the smoke is still there all the time though.

my hair has gone grey due to this car.

you might have some oil leaking into the manifold from somewhere. Might mean an oil breather tube is blocked, forcing oil into the manifold?

you've cleaned the EGR and manifold as much as poss ( I recommend Wynns Carb Cleaner). Liberally spray in and on the EGR valve, reconnect but leave the can hose in. Start up and get someone to rev it, as you liberally spray into the manifold. Watch all the smoke come out and the engine will stutter a bit.

Worth a go?

i have had the car taken to a garage today, hopefully they will find the problem.

there is some oil in the egr valve, a mechanic friend told me that it might be the seals on the turbo. but also that some oil is expected in there.

i will wait now, to see what the garage diagnose.

hopefully it will be a minor problem, and not a major one.

i'll keep u updated. thnx for help.

:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D RESULT...!!!!

i had to take the car back to vw, and told them it was a problem with the injector they fitted about 1yr ago (i was guessing, hoping they will fix it)..but they said they will check it. and then give a diagnosis...

When they checked it, it was the injector and was replaced FREE of charge..under warrenty..

im absolutely over the moon, and i love vw..

ive saved a lot of money.

happy happy happy. no smoke and drives like new again...
